Celtic manager Neil Lennon backs plans for overseas Old Firm clash that could end up in the United States

The Bhoys boss has lent his support to a proposal for a postseason fixture abroad, provided that the players are given sufficient time to rest during the summer break.

Celtic manager Neil Lennon has revealed he would be open to the idea of an Old Firm fixture played overseas.

"It depends on the circumstances and depends if we could generate the interest, although I'm sure we could in America," Lennon told Sky Sports.

Rangers' chief operating officer Ali Russell made the suggestion over the weekend that the Glasgow giants could meet in a money-spinning tie away from Scotland, with the United States mooted as the most likely destination.

The idea was given credence by the Scottish Football Association president Campbell Ogilvie, who stated that any official request for the friendly fixture put forth by either club would be given 'due consideration'.

Hoops' boss Lennon has now added his support to the idea, but has stressed that there are a number of issues which must be resolved before such a fixture could become reality.

"In the postseason, it depends how harrowing the season has been on the players," he said. "If they have to travel to America to play in a friendly, I'm not sure too many players would want to put their hands up for that one."
