not to sound cliche, but fck the industry.. between being a scapegoat and being placed on a shelf, it can really test your patience..

not even to mention how the people who you think you're actually dealing with, it aint even really them.. dont say anything about lizzie..

a better comparison to the industry is the game of musical chairs.. only problem is the people who have the connections in the industry dont tell you that you're involved in the game.. you just better find a chair when the music stops and the money goes..

look out for the clones, too.. niggas think because they have a distant cousin that looks EXACTLY like them and has an album out that they deserve the same respect.. doesnt work like that..

From a lot of these stories, I'd say know what you want and put it in writing. And if they want you to sign something, read the fine print.

So I made this thread because I've put my foot in the door in the music industry through radio hosting. I've come to find out that the game is cutthroat, full of politics, and you're always under the scope.

My questions are, what does it take to make it in the industry? (behind the scenes and in the scene)

What are your experiences? politics? Skills needed? contracts? tours? press?

Post anything you know about the industry so people can get the raw reality of the business

You would think rappers in today's social media age would wake up to realize they don't need big business.

Sure, you wouldn't be on a major label or have millions of fans, but you have total control over what goes into your content.( IE the DIY mentality that is in Indie Rock music.)

To be mainstream, you have to appeal to tweens and teens. F that. I am not dumbing myself down for a specific demographic.

I am thankful to have an uncle who knows how to play guitar/drums who taught me how to record beats myself. Not many Hip Hop artists have that skill. They hire someone else to do it for them.

You dont have to dumb yourself down to reach tweens and teen, they are the biggest consumers of all music underground or mainstream, you just gotta get it in their face which inlies the problem, the money boundary

But you owning the masters to all your music and never going platinum is > than owning no masters and having a platinum plaque (cause its not really yours).

Money upfront seems like a good idea, but realize they are loaning for the most part expecting to not get it back. You're just a write off. Knowing this should sway you to not blow your advance on dumb shit, but it just doesnt get through to alot of these dudes who never had shit.
