I can't explain it, I listened to his catalog on a marathon session, I wasn't too intoxicated and for some odd reason that I can't explain I started believing that he would be the greatest.

I don't throw out co-signs for everybody and I been had Kendrick Lamar heavy in rotation but it's something in J. Coles music that connected with me like the first time my older brother played me Tupac.

Honestly I don't. I mean the boy can rap, I'm not gonna sit here and pretend like he can't. He's just missing "something" that I can't quite put my finger on.

People in this thread have mentioned Nas as a comparable rapper, but IMO Nas has "IT" and Cole does not. I'm not sure if its presence on a track, charisma, or being able to form a connection with the listener but Cole just doesn't do it for me. Its further perplexing because I honestly can relate to alotta things Cole is rapping about, but he just doesn't pull me in to wanna listen. I relate to KRIT on a lot of levels as well and I've never had a problem listening to any of his music.......

Cole just can't reach me like that. Not to say that its impossible to feel Cole's music, I just don't think I'm the only one who feels that way. What Cole is doing right now is cool but if wants to be up their with the other mainstream rappers he's gonna need more "IT". I know that made no sense, but that's the best I can explain it.

What people are failing to see is that J. Cole has the following that he has right now because he's NOT what y'all are saying he should be. He appeals to the ANTI-mainstream crowd (hence the backlash he's getting for "Work Out"). They like him because he DOESN'T rely on a backstory or a gimmick. He's the backpack savior right now, just like Lupe was back in 2006. All the things y'all are saying he SHOULD do will do nothing but alienate his fan base. J. Cole and Roc Nation both need to accept that he's not a mainstream rapper...they should just milk this huge backpack-type following he has for all it's worth...he has the potential to be the biggest "underground star" we've ever seen and I really don't think there would be anything wrong with that.

Lupe gave up the baccpacc to Cole when he sold his soul to Atlantic and they turned LASERS into a devil-worshipping Eurohop moccery.
