I picked it up later, but I have a decent grasp of the basics like how to build chords, build melody from root note etc. Just having a book or two on deck with different chord progressions in them and things like that for reference makes the process much easier. Even if you dont know shit you can plug the chords in and see how they sound. You cant copyright a chord progression for the most part. And then once you grasp that most melodies have a chord progression at their core and stay in key its off to the races from there.

Any books you can recommended? Which ones did you use?

I definitely recommend Alfred's Essentials of Music Theory, this book is fairly easy to digest and walks you along at a good pace. It also would be a good idea to have a chord wheel for reference. This helps you map out different chord progressions for each key. Chord wheels are very easy to find.

Learn the Circle of 4ths for r & b and the Circle of 5ths for everything else. You could literally write 1000 songs a day once you grasp this

I'm ready to release my first beat tape but need y'all opinions on it.

How long should each beat be? I don't want to drag the beat with the typical intro/8 bar chorus/16 verse/4 bar bridge/chorus/verse/outro.

Any suggestions on how to keep the listener interested? I know hip hop beats can be repetitive without an MC but I don't want to add too many elements and switch ups to potential rapper being turned off because of too much going on.

@BarryHalls

do what you want, i personally would have either all short songs or short mixed with long , nobody wants to listen to a beat tape with 20 tracks 3:50 each unless its amazing

also are you making a beat tape or an instrumental album?
