Unforgivable Blackness: The Rise and Fall of Jack Johnson | PBS
i've seen this before, but re watched over the weekend... such a good ass documentary. its two parts. The rise then the fall of Jack Johnson..narrated by James Earl Jones & Samuel L Jackson, and others.
this shit is nearly 4 hours long. but worth the watch
for those who dont know. Jack Johnson was the first black heavyweight champion.. and to say white people put him through some shit would be an understatement. White fighters constantly ducked him claiming the color line, where whites wouldn't fight blacks... then he got the belt and beat every white fighter they put in front of him. starting the search for the "great white hope". then since they couldnt beat him in the ring. the FBI CREATED LAWS just to get him. IMO this was Muhammad Ali. BEFORE Muhammad Ali
the craziest thing about this doc to me though... is when they read articles and show newspaper clippings from newspapers back then. I'm talking La times NY times, major newspapers. hearing/seeing some of the things being said about him... shit is insane and reflective to some of the things we have going on to this very day a century later. add this to your collection!
