CLOUD ATLAS (GRADE A) 6 Movies in 1, From the Directors of the Legendary "Matrix Trilogy" and the Cult Classic "Run Lola Run" comes this amazing film. Now I'm not going to lie, you either going to love this film or hate it. 1st it's 2hr 45mins long, so it does drag in the beginning but after the 1st 45 minutes that sets up all the stories, you go on this crazy ass ride. The 6 stories go from 6 seperate stories to one story that seems to connect to each other. The Cast basically plays different characters in each story. It's an amazing job by all the actors. Without spoiling the movie the 6 stories deal with, Slavery, Homosexuality, Freedom, Love, Conspiracy, Fate, Destiny, Sacrifice, Friendship, Hate, Evil, Old Age, Future, Apcoloypse. They just cover so many themes that I had to give it up for this movie. I understand why it flopped, this movie will go over the average movie goer's head. It's a complex film that will be a Classic in the future. It's a head of it's time. It comes out on DVD in February.

As the year winds down, I'd like to thank everyone who looked at or replied to this thread. When I made this thread I was going through some things and I found comfort in watching movies. It's amazing to look back at all the movies I've watched since April of this year. Let's keep this going. Any movie you've watched recently, give a review and recommend it so people can check it out. Again thanks to everyone who contributed to this thread thus far.

"DJANGO UNCHAINED" GRADE = C+

Well I finally got a chance to see what is easily the most controversial film of the year and of QT's career. The movie was average at best and here's why. 1st let me say technically it was a very well made film. Jamie, Sam, Leo and Waltz all gave really strong performances in the roles and drove the movie. It was shot very well as the shots of the landscapes of middle America were really accented. It was more Western than Blaxplotation as everyone was saying but I guess that was QT's point. I did enjoy the Action of the film and it was very positive to see a Black Hero take no prisoners. That right there was enough for my C+ grade.

The reason why it couldn't get higher was the movie's flaws outshinned what was good about it. 1st we all have gone back and forth about how slavery should and shouldn't be portrayed in film. I really think in this case QT uses it a gimmick to drive the story when it honestly probably wasn't even needed. He could of set this after the Civil War. America was still very racist and he could of had the same scenario because even though Slaves were free, many slaves stayed the south and continued to work on Plantations. So I do agree with people saying he used Slavery as a "Shock Value" thing. Next it was clear the "White Savoir" formula wither purposely or not was used to drive this story. It should of been called "Dr. King Swaltz" unchained cause the movie is basically told through his perspective.

He basically has to guide Django every step of the way which falls right in line with the Blacks can't do anything for ourselves concept. It basically has a buddy cop feel to it, think 48 hours or Lethal Weapon of the 1850's. Next the movie was about 30 minutes way to long and it effected the pacing. So he frees Django, breaks down the bounty hunter business and takes him on about 2 bounties. Next thing you know they find the Brittle Brothers very quickly. There was no character development with Django's character. QT should of spent more time training Django and show him learning things from Waltz so the 1st act feels very rushed.

Now when they finally get to the Plantation. Kerry Washington had to be the weakest written woman character QT has ever done in his career. He whole role was about 10 lines, the rest she was speaking German. Then she was whipped, nude and just again a weak character. He had her showing zero strength at all to me. Leo played a really good Plantation owner and yes Sam did killed it as Uncle Tom/Rukas character but it was exaggerated but maybe that's what they were going for. As for how Slavery was depicted, he showed the brutal sides. The Mandigo fighting, Dogs attacking the Slave, Lashings/Whippings. The whole near castration scene. And even the opening scene with him getting Django. QT didn't in my view trivialize the brutality of Slavery but he used it in a way to remind the audience of the horrors while keeping the story going.

So we get to the climax of the film and not to my surprise. Django doesn't even get to kill the main villain, Dr. King does. We basically get two endings cause of course it would of been wack for it to end that way. Django comes back and wreaks havoc and saves the day. There was some social commentary if you read between the lines but QT didn't really make it a point to have the message spelled out for you. It was done suddenly. I do feel the movie was trying to be overly comedic for it subject matter. The Music was good in spots and terrible in others. Here I am trying to feel like I'm in Slave times in the 1800's and Rick Ross comes on like it's a damn rap video, SMH, through way out of the moment. Some of the music just doesn't work cause again using modern music in a period piece just throws it off.

Now here's where I feel Spike was right without even seeing it. Slavery was a very serious issue in America History. I do agree with him that making an Action Adventure Slavery movie for the masses is kinda watering down the history. Someone in the "Django" review thread said, "White People hung there heads after watching Roots, Rosewood, Burning in Mississippi etc. They were laughing and having a good time with Django". I kinda agree with this. Sure he showed how horrible White people were back then but the movie didn't really in my view go even far enough. I think early criticism of the script forced him to take out things that might have helped the story to me. Beside Waltz Killing Candie being horrible (Can't let the Black Hero kill the main villain, SMH).

He had the nerve to ultimately make Sam basically the main villain (Black on Black crime, lol). So it's an uneven movie at best. The Technical side was great but the story, pacing and other issues affected it. I understand why some Black enjoyed it cause at it's core it was about getting "The Man" back. Jamie whipping one of the Brittle Brothers was one of the most powerful images for me. As Well as him riding the horse to save his women. Overall I kinda see and understand what QT was trying to do but he should of through it through a little more. So it did entertain but I couldn't help watching it wondering did it slightly water down slavery just for being again an Action Adventure Slavery film. It ranks in the Bottom half of QT's career:

#1. Pulp Fiction (A+)

#2. Reservoir Dogs (B+)

#3. Jackie Brown (B)

#4. Kill Bill (B)

#5. Inglorious Bastards (B -)

#6. Kill Bill 2 (B -)

#7. Django Unchained (C +)

#8. Death Proof (C -)

zero-dark-thirty-poster.jpg

(GRADE= B -) Well Kathern Bigalow is back with another military/war film with "Zero Dark Thirty" which tells the story of the decade long hunt for Bin Laden. She won at the Oscars with "The Hurt Locker" so she uses the same formula here. Use a real life military event and dramatize it. The 1st and 2nd acts are good. You follow along with this female CIA agent on a mission. It shows graphic details of torture and everything the U.S. did to get the information to find Bin Laden. The movie again starts at 9/11 and ends in 5/1/11.

It shows several of different famous terrorist attacks happen over this past decade including 7/7 and the car bomb in Times Square. Technically the movie was good and very well acting. The suspense was there also. The problem came during the Raid, it was very boring and they made the capture of Bin Liden weak and he went out like a B!tch basically.

Because of that it made me feel the film was more U.S. propaganda that promoted torture more than anything. I can't take the U.S. official story on the capture of Bin Ladin seriously and the movie made it even more like a fairy tale. Call me a conspiracy theorist if you may but I wasn't feeling the message of the movie. It was one big U.S. government "pat ourselves on the back" movie. The Main actress in it did do a good job though, you felt her struggle in doing everything to find this man.

I just saw Texas Chainsaw so don't

The movie sucks dick flat out

So in this dumb ass movie it starts promising then rapidly turns to shit.

Leather Face is damn near the good guy and the killings happen way too soon then right when you're thinking it's

getting interesting it jumps the shark and gets super stupid. It's short and lame.

the-hobbit-poster.jpg

(GRADE= C+) Peter Jackson returns to Middle Earth in the 1st of the new Prequel Trilogy to "The Lord of the Rings" with "The Hobbit: The Unexpected Journey". Considering that I watched the cartoon of the "The Hobbit" growing up as kid, I was wondering how they were going to stretch it to 3 movies. Anyways I know the story pretty well. I was a fan of the original trilogy which is now a Classic Trilogy in Film History so of course I would give this one a chance. But like any series, the 4th film will always be tricky. Like the Star Wars trilogy with "Episode I", "The Hobbit" mostly lets down.

It's basically feels like the exact same movie as the previous ones just with a new character. Peter brings back familiar actors to remind us of the previous trilogy but the movie itself was kinda boring. The action was cool in parts but the overall feel of the movie dragged on cause these dudes love to "WALK" in these movies, lol. It was cool to see a live action version of The Hobbit though. Technically the film was great, effects were dope. Acting was good. But this should not be a trilogy. Unless your a fan of the originals, I don't know if you will enjoy it as a casual movie fan. You have to be into fantasy. And remember this is just 1 of 3 films so the movie just ends without a conclusion.

LINCOLN (GRADE= A) Steven Spielberg drops another historical masterpiece with "Lincoln" which to me surpasses all films about a President in the U.S. (JFK is a close 2nd). This isn't your typical Bio Picture as the movie doesn't focus on Lincoln's childhood or raise to become President. Instead the movie soley focuses on the last 3 months of his life before he was assassinated. The film deals with Lincoln's struggle to end the Civil War and Free Blacks in America. It gave you the political side of Slavery from a historical context.

Daniel Day Lewis killed it, I don't know how Lincoln talked back then but Lewis made me believe he was Lincoln. Tommy Lee Jones and Sally Field also gave good performances. It was a great cast and of course it was very well directed. This is Steven's 3rd film dealing with Blacks Struggle in America (Amistad and The Color Purple were the other 2). But this time he told it through a President's eyes. After Tarantino took me on a Slave Adventure with "Django", it was kinda refreshing to watch this to put me back into the reality of Slavery and why there were many that wanted it to continue.

Steven does a great job showing the duel sides of Lincoln wanted to keep the union going and freeing slaves for generations to come. People love to say the Civil War and the Emancipation wasn't about Slavery but preserving the union. This is true to an extent. But at the end of the day under crazy political pressure. Lincoln got that 13 amendment passed and thus this Black Man in 2013 is Free in America to even type this review (To an extend, lol). Overall the movie made me appreciate Lincoln historically a little more cause he went through a lot trying to convince so many people that it was time to end Slavery in America.

I fell asleep during Lincoln. I feel pretty bad about it, but it was incredibly slow. DDL was outstanding as expected but it was pretty snoozy. I couldn't make it halfway through Lawless, not that I expected much.

(GRADE= A) Denzel is back in command with his 6th Oscar Nominated role making him the most nominated African American in Oscar History. Director Robert Zemekis of the Back to the future Trilogy, Forrest Gump and Castaway is back in Live Action for the 1st time in a decade. Flight tells the amazing story of a pilot who lands a plane against terrible odds only to find himself under investigation about the crash. Denzel gave such a great performance. One of the best roles of his career. He was such a tortured soul, you can feel the pain and see his struggle. The movie just builds and builds to the hearing at the end about the crash. You will hate Denzel in this role more than when he was Alonzo cause just when you want to root for him he will disappoint you. Overall great movie. Denzel went in of course.
