so what exactly should kanye rap about

Because I know you're not suggesting he should turn down money you would gladly take

he can and clearly raps about whatever he damn well chooses. no ones trying to take his freedom of speech away from him.

thats not what I'm asking

If you don't like the subject matter he is speaking about what would you prefer him to talk about

Because he's not and will never be the guy selling beats jay rapping through a neck brace again

That time has past

Some artist aren't meant to grow to a certain point musically

what I AM saying is that THIS subject matter coming from a 2013 Kanye is hard to take seriously....atleast for me.

word ...

the message is going to go into one ear and out the other of the average mofo the minute they see ye on tv or in the magazines driving around LA in his lambo with kim

I'm just wait for the album, dl and make my decision, just funny he went from Robb Report with JayZ to now being the outsider but somehow he's getting the marketing (SNL) of an insider?

first i'm black ...also i'm a woman... and yes stop with the insults not the best way to win an argument

with that said now let's look at the lyrics of the first verse...

You see it's broke nigga racism

That's that "Don't touch anything in the store"

And this rich nigga racism

That's that "Come here, please buy more"

What you want, a Bentley? Fur coat? A diamond chain?

All you blacks want all the same things

Used to only be niggas now everybody playing

Spending everything on Alexander Wang

New Slaves

^

lol....what do you think he meant by that? why do you think he emphasized the phrase "new slaves" at the end of the verse? smh. let me further break it down for you

When you start making a little sense I won't come off as so insulting ... I simply call a spade a spade ...

He could be meaning a lot of things by that last phrase ... He could simply be introducing the topic ... He could be referring to the fact that cross class racism still exsist as it did when his mother was younger ... hence the play on the term "new slaves" as to say we as blacks are still subjugated to racism on many different levels.... all of that would make more sense then what your implying as it actually correlates to the rest of the story hes setting up with ALL of the other lyrics in that first verse ... The problem with the logic in your arguement is that your completely ignoring lyrical context ...your cherry picking one phrase one line and defining the entire content based off of that instead of cronologically following the implied narrative ... Which is why your confused... As I said before ... in order for what your saying to be correct you would have to ignore the fact that he is giving specific examples of racist ideology throught that whole first verse ... You would would have to ignore him bringing up his mother not getting preferential treatment because she wasn't "fair skinned" (example of racist ideology) you would have to ignore him saying "they" wouldn't be satisfied unless I picked the cotton myself (example of racist ideology) you would have to ignore him juxtaposing the prejudicial treatment rich blacks and non rich blacks both experience from other parties regardless of social economic status (example of racist ideology)

Now if you totally ignore all of that context then yes I suppose him speaking in first person and chastising black people would make sense .... I suppose that would flow and legitimize him critiquing materialism within the culture ... But does that logically make any sense to you? Does it make sense that he would set up all of these examples of a group of people (which includes himself) being chastised, judged, segregated, and discriminated against only to turn around and do the same damn thing a few sentances later by directly implying that "all black people want the same thing" does that really make any sense to you? So he set up all of this context of racist ideology only to agree with it and further promote it by sharing a racist view point? Really? Man GTFOH

Now wouldn't it make more sense given the context that he set up throughougt the verse to assume that what he was implying when he says ....

"And then there's rich nigga racism, that's that come here please by mo'"

"What you want Bentley fur coat a new chain"

Is actually once again an example of typical racist ideology? Wouldn't it fit the context of the lyrics more than him randomly decideding to also adopt a generalizing train of thought and chastise his culture? Wouldn't it make more sense to interpret the "what you want" line as him sarcastically mimicking something that one of these racist individuals would say? Who do you think he's speaking as when he says "come here please by mo?" Is Ye a fuckin store salesman now? No ... If you put the lyric together it should read as such ...

Then there's that RICH NIGGA RACISM (which hes about to give you an example of) that's that "Come here please by mo', what you want a Bentley? Fur coat? A new chain?"

That's the salesperson trying to solicit a "rich nigga" based on what they generalize their priorities to be... That's not kanye first handedly chastising black consumerism ... As that would make no sense and completely go against the lyrical context the that verse is giving you...

Y’all throwing contracts at me/You know that niggas can’t read.....Throw him some Maybach keys....Fuck it, c’est la vie...I know that we the new slaves/Y’all niggas can’t fuck with me

^

Its thoughts on artists becoming slaves to corporations for the almighty dollar

Again ....context .... That line is about control... The maybach keys represent enticement also him bringing this up again goes back to the point of racist ideology thinking you can "buy" someone thru a luxurious item... Thinking that "alllll these blacks want Bentleys fur coats and new chains" so lets pacify them by tossing them these maybach keys .. But in turn we can then control him and exploit him at our will ..hence kanye saying "fuck you and your coporation y'all niggas can't control me" also when he says "you know That niggas cant read" thats another Instance of sarcasim thats him playin on black sterotypes that "these" idivuals have ... or do you also take that in the literal and think that Kanye is claiming blacks are dumb & "all niggas cant read?" The whole point of the song is to explain and expose continued racism and the means in which these corporations imploy those racist ideologies ... He then gives you multiple instances of how these ploys play out ... This whole notion that the song is about kanye criticizing "materialistic culture" or "criticizing the citizens" dosent really hold to much weight as he is clearly portraying the citizen as the victim

When he says "we the new slaves" that's meant to be taken in the literal but in this context ... A certain segment of our population literally are slaves to the prison industrial complex ... And the reaaon that shit like that is happenig would be due to the idea that we're looked upon as nothing more than "slaves" in the minds of racist corporations

Corporations deploying/carrying out age old exploitive racist ideology would be the primary antagonist and focal point in the song not the people ..

This is not a "you stupid niggas are dumb for being new slaves" song it's a "nigga look at what they're doing to us" song

Read this yesterday on another site. That journalist had some points here and there but mostly that article was garbage. He should study this subject more if he wants to write on it. Like that line he referenced about darkskinned girls. Kanye didn't say that line in Power if I'm not mistaken.

yes he said that in "power"....

The system broken, the schools closed, the prisons open/ We ain't got nothin' to lose, Motha----er, we rollin'/ Huh? Motha----er, we rollin'/ With some light-skinned girls and some Kelly Rowlands

the consensus is kelly rowland a very beautiful dark skinned woman. when you say you're rollin' with kelly rowlands, the audience knows immediately that you're not just dealing with just any dark girls... while "light-skinned girls" is enough to suggest that the women you're rolling with are beautiful. that's the problem with the lyric....

Got damn a Nigga can't even big up dark skin females without people bitching? Kelly is synomous with being dark skinned ..so if your rolling with some light skin girls and some Kelly Roland's she would be the synonym for dark skin girls .. that's just a play on words saying your mess with both types .... Got damn dark skin women so insecure about their status in popular culture that they can't even take a compliment without pitching for ill intent ..... That's sad

lol never said this was a song that was intended to bash me or any other black person...dont know where u got that from

Anyways im not the one cherry picking. You initially chose to focus your entire argument around the 3rd verse

And you're not totally wrong

but if you look at the song in its entirety its clear he is not only commenting on the prison industrial complex, race, class and corporatism and their exploitative practices, he is also commenting on how we are complicit in it hence ye repeating the line "we the new slaves" , and how he plans to put an end to it ( by raping his hamptons wife and cuming on her blouse)...

He uses the examples of racist ideology to make the point that unlike in the past when blacks were enslaved with chains, whips, Jim crow( water fountain line), etc we are now enslaved by materialism and the corporate dollar

Lol....guess me and everyone else besides you are wrong though...smh

Hmm ...something here dosent add up ..he's calling "people" out for being complicit & slave like as you say... But yet he's at the same damn time not bashing anyone? ..as you also say.... Because you know ... Calling someone complicit and slave like are such endeering terms? ...right ... I gotcha...

I will give you this tho ...based on this post alone ...if anybody knows about a good contradiction .. It would be yourself.

Lol....guess me and everyone else besides you are wrong though...smh

This is some of the weakest itellectualy dishonest shit I've ever read (you better check them reaction buttons baby and get your facts straight if you want to come with this gibberish) ..but I'll allow you to humor me... So the old majority rules rationale right? ...well a majority of people voted bush back into office for a second term I suppose by yor logic "they" were right ...correct? I mean majority rules right? you know that worked out so well ...

A majority of people thought the world was flat at one point ...according to desertrains logic ... Those niggas was spot on right .... I mean you know ....majority rules right?

Lol ... This shit it comical ..

Listen ... My arguement in this situation is more logical than your argument ... That's why I'm right ... Not because someone cosigns me ... And you brining up some nonsense about "majority rules" ... which isnt wven accurate in this case only furthers that point..

endeering terms? what is this you speak of?.... lol

and bruh no one in this thread has posted anything disputing that the lyrics of the song has strong anti-consumerism, anti materialistic undertones but you. nevamind the reaction buttons....is that of great importance or even relevant to our discussion? no...i just find it funny and thought i should point that out

complicit may have been too strong a word. but again from my pov i don't think ye was bashing black people in particular ...he himself admitted that he is also a " new slave" hence the world "we", and the last couple of lines of the first verse he says " All you blacks want all the same things/ Used to only be niggas now everybody play me Spending everything on Alexander Wang" ...

again for me the song was a critique of the powers that be that seek to control and exploit us while we little people (including ye lol) accept what we are given because we are all under the spell of materialism ...

i dunno how else to explain it... let's agree to disagree ...i like ye's earlier music...he's a great artist...though he spits some truth just feel he's comes off as fake and disingenuous sometimes, especially when listening to "new slaves" considering he rides around in million dollar cars and has ties with many of corporations that seek to exploit me and my mine... i really don't think he cares about you or the prisoners that fill up our prisons just the mighty dollar, which is cool ...the whole i waste my time and money on bullshit yet im trying to change my ways schtick from ye is getting old ....and also the song is meh

smh @ me for wasting time arguing with you on what that dick head actually meant...*shrugs*

And why do I resent Kanye's music? For some of the various reasons why I find it at times enlightening, he is smart. Unlike many rappers in hip-hop who are obvious industry pinheads just trying to cash into the bank, Kanye West knows more. Yet, that is perhaps the very problem: he knows more and yet does nothing to actually fix the problem. As much as my cousin would complain about the streets he lived on, he actually did nothing in actually helping. What is worse on Kanye's part is that he has a massive influential audience and yet he does nothing but continue to perpetuate the same negative stereotypes and misfortunes that he complains about.

This is the reason I cant fuck with Drake either or any of these new dudes for that matter... They know better but they still do/say the same old shit

I agree with that article, I been saying this about Kanye since Graduation but niggas be like "dude is a crazy producer, or dude be dropping knowledge" but thats besides the point

Too me, lyrically Kanye is Rick Ross without out the fake street life, he may drop knowledge from time to time and have cool flows but its all made irrelevant by the fluff/filler material that engulfs each n every verse and song...

Who knows tho, I havent given up, I know the dude who put out College Dropout and LR is capable of making some real heartfelt music again.

Just a matter of time before the sarcastic arrogance dissipates and he realizes life aint about what you have or what you dont, its about what you do... And he hasnt done anything noteworthy in quite awhile
