I really don't think popularity has much to do with it. Remember when Esperanza Spalding beat out Drake and Justin Beiber for best new artist? Very few people had heard of her, because she was a jazz singer!

naw popularity do has some to do with it when it comes to rap , but any other award that doesn't include all rap, they dig deep into it
