Channel orange was definitely one of the best R&B albums ive ever heard. I thought him and the Weeknd were on the same level but after that album he showed hes way ahead of his peers creatively.
One reason i think people are indentifying him as a rapper is because he doesnt really focus on hitting notes as he tries more to show his abstract lyricism in his songs.
Call me crazy but channel orange and good kid maad city are parallel in many ways in that they just are creatively, dare i say ingenious (for this climate) bodies of work.
Whoever thinks of someone more as a rapper just because they express themselves through "abstract lyricism" is a dumbass. But this thread is about the Grammys... and not only did Frank Ocean sing about sucking dick in front of millions of families at the Grammys but he sounded like shit doing it too.
No you fucking derelict i was saying that his songs arent the typical structure of an R&B style. Hes not really singing hard on most of his songs but you can see where he puts most of his efforts on his creativity and lyrics.
But yeah I left out his production is also very hip hop jazzy sounding.
Dudes gay as fuck but hes a hell of an artist and that performance wansnt bad i just think it wasnt what people expected.
?? You even know what a derelict is? LOL @ looking up the Webster word of the day without reading the definition. It doesn't matter what his style is. Anyone who identifies a singer that does nothing but sings as a rapper is slow. Frank a dope songwriter but his voice ain't all that (especially live). That's why that performance was so TURRIBLE. Dude was off-key, flat...and that whistling lmaoooo.
Sidenote: anyone notice how there was not one rap performance this year, minus the closer?
Thats why I added it could be the production which has a very hip hop sound. Also he does rap in some of his songs and he freestyles hes done when he started with O.F. Also lets not act like R&B artist dont get called rappers all the time by people who arent big into urban culture.
As far as his live perfomances i just dont think he focuses too much on the singing as he seems more concerned with getting his creativity across to people. But i dont expect people who arent too much into his music to see that.
