See, I'd have Nas as a legend for the impact he's had on Hip Hop. He's still relevant now after such a long time. I think the only thing that does stop Nas being one is the fact that the other ones who would probably be considered legends have been seen as icons at their peaks (of popularity) and I don't know if Nas ever did. I was only just born and beginning to group up when he first released Illmatic and began to get more relevant so I don't know what his status was like back then so I can't really say, whereas I can say someone like Jay-Z is seen as an icon right now and has been for ages which will place him as a legend.

What impact did Nas have?

-there were conscious artists before Nas turned conscious

-people were claiming Hip Hop was dead before Nas said it

-for all the rappers that were influenced by Nas, which is alot, he himself has never done anything "groundbreaking". (Distant Relatives was an amazing album though.)

-Illmatic's initial sales were very low

Nas had a direct influence on Eminem. Em wrote Infinite while listening to Illmatic. His influence on Jay has already been discussed in the Reason. Rappers like 50, Cormega, AZ, Nature, & Prodigy all used a piece of Nas's legacy to establish their careers.

Not sure what album sales have to do with anything. 36 Chambers, OB4CL and Reasonable Doubt didnt exactly dominate the charts either. Doesnt mean people weren't checking for Nas.
