I always felt that Talib would consistently get beat on his own tracks when someone was featuring. It's not that his bars are wack, its just that vocally someone with more charisma/orthodox flow will always get him. Even someone who isn't a "lyricist". Case in point:

I actually never thought of it that way, but T/S is right. I think Talib is a legend in that he was a lightning rod for conscious rap in the late 90s/early 2000s. He paved the way for cats to express themselves other than bragging about being dope rappers or being rich, or at least pushed that level of expression further in mainstream rap. His goal in rap doesn't seem to be to have the best verses in songs, but to provide a perspective in the Black/human experience. That might prevent him from besting his peers, but Talib's presence was sorely needed in hip hop.

Talib's strength is his consistency and ability to stay mentally grounded while still experimenting musically. Com might give us a UMC and EC every now and then, Mos struggled his whole career to drop anything on par with Blackstarr and BOBS, and Kanye, well... yeah. Talib to me has them all beat based on almost 20 years of solid work. Train of Thought to this day is one of the most diverse albums I ever heard in all of music.
