In terms of playing GTA...my son had it when he was 13.
If you think your kids will be heavily influenced by it, then don't let them play....all kids are different.
I think it's harsh perosnally at 16...I mean, what do they tell their friends when they all want to link up online? "My mama wont let me play"...lol...I hope they dont get bullied because you think they are not capable of realising it's just a game.
I keep telling my mother about this new e-generation where the internet exposes kids to everything as soon as they leave the house to walk to school.
Kids got smart phones. Do you really think that at 16 they don't know exactly what GTA is about? They be watching it along with other stuff in the school yard.
And that is what I don't want...for my kids to do shit behind my back because I won't allow them to experience things in the house.

I came to the USA from Nigeria in 2003 at the age of 8. My sisters were 5 and 3. My parents were in grad school/PhD programs so there was a fair number of restrictions of things we could and couldn't do. It wasn't strictness per se, but being conservative in what influences we allowed into our lives.
I wasn't able to sleep over kids houses until I was 15. At first I thought this was stupid, but my parents wanted we kids to have a strong sense of our family values before going out to "adopt" other people's. In Nigeria, we view friends as family member you get to choose. We don't choose our uncles or aunts, but we choose our friends. Many of my relatives that I call Uncle or Aunt or cousin are merely just very good family friends of parents.
I didn't get a TV in my room till I was 17. Again, parents wanted to make sure I was productive and not spending my days watching mindless filth (especially Porn).
Looking back at it, I think my parents were not strict, but instead trying to set me down the straight and narrow path, in the US, it's very easy to go wayward very quickly.
I look at a lot of my former colleagues that had "cool" parents and seen some of the negative effects it's led to i.e. teen pregnancy, flunking college, general aint shitness.
Coming from Nigeria to the USA (aka the land of opportunity and the land of excess) you have to be sure you stick to a plan or its easy to get "trapped" in the system in the US. I think my parents did well for themselves and their kids. They stayed humble and kept to their values. Dad got an MBA from a Top 10 business school. Mom got a Masters and PhD from a top 3 medical school. I'm in a top public institution and both of my younger sisters are in Ivy leagues. Not too bad for a small Nigerian family that came to country with little money and a dream.
Side Note: I don't really buy too much of that let your child discover themselves at 14...that's some bullshit...they are very malleable at that age, easy influenced by pop culture and what not. I'm in college now and 1/3 of the girls have these funny septum piercing, out here looking like oxen.
