I'm excited about it cause I feel like the talented new artist are comin in at full force. My problems are that everybody is too friendly. A little competition is good. I also as of right now don't get the feelin that any of the new cats can be BIG stars. Soon Jay, Nas, Em are gon put the mic down and sit back, and I see great artist comin, but I don't see BIG artist in any of these dudes.

Hip-hop for me personally is just fine. My favorite artist Mos Def released the Ecstatic in '09, the Roots dropped a damn near classic in '10, Canibus just dropped an album, Nas dropped the Distant Relatives joint, Ghostface is getting ready to release a new album etc. Hip-hop is thriving from my perception.

...Regarding the whole commercial Hip-hop scene, I'm waiting for some unity within hip-hop between the artists who have substantial revenue. If they put their money together, they can create their own record labels, and push the real talent.

I see JayZ trying to do it with Wale and J.Cole.

Kanye's been doing his thing with Common and G.O.O.D Music. And now with the addition of Mos Def, his camp is continually getting stronger.

Eminem with Slaughterhouse.

....I think these other artists need to catch on to what JayZ and Kanye are trying to do. Nas should get together with Lupe and LL and start another record label...... If these artists use their business sense, they will find out that they don't need these major record labels.

Boycott Atlantic Records, Def Jam etc. ....If they don't want to push real music, then fuck 'em. Move on....What about Irv Gotti or Dame? Someone should hook up with these guys and start another record label. In brief, we need more balance in the commercial world, someone needs to step up.

Very good points. the internet makes the music industry such a leveled playing field in my opinion. look at guys like Wiz Khalifa who created his whole movement from the net. I like what Dame Dash/Curren$y/Ski Beatz have going on, they have like this renaissance thing going on. fuck the majors we major lol

The state of Hip Hop is ALL the way fucked up because, when Hip Hop is being discussed there is, no mention of B-boying, Turntablism, and Graph. Just the Music (rapping). This alone screams most people who LISTEN to Hip Hop know nothing about it, let alone recognize or respect the other art forms that make up Hip Hop.

I was just thinking about this shit today. I feel bad for the state of Hip-Hop because of what people see on TV and hear on the radio. They see and hear the commercial side of Hip-Hop and think that's what it's all about. A bunch of non-rapping, unintelligent, so-called coke slanging, gun bussin', in and out of jail fuck-ups. The general consensus among people that listen to other music besides Hip-Hop is that it sucks, and it's guys like Wayne, Gucci, Wacka, Jeezy, Plies, and any other rapper of the sort that gives Hip-Hop a bad name. The commercial Hip-Hop has eclipsed the underground because of airplay. The saddest thing i've ever heard a "rapper" say was in "Hood Nigga" when Gorilla Zoe said "this rap shit is easy, every beat I get, I murk".......to me, that says that just any and everybody can hop on a fucking record and say that they are a true rapper. Even somebody with absolutely NO, NADA, ZILCH, ZERO talent. I give props to 50 Tyson for trying despite autism, but what the fuck is he doing on a record? And Antione Dodson.......it's a fucking sad day when a dude who danced into traffic and got hit by an ice-cream truck, and a faggot who made a damn fool out of himself on national television can get a pass in Hip-Hop. I feel sorry for J.Cole because I honestly feel that he's not gonna get the proper shine that he's supposed to, because of dudes like Drake, Wayne and the rappers I mentioned above. They all suck, and I don't care what anyone says. And this.......right here.......is my.......swag, FOH! Soulja Boy is a fucking joke to the name of Hip-Hop. Dude sounded like Stevie off of Malcolm In the Middle. I said all that to say this, I feel that Hip-Hop has fallen waaaaaaaaay off, and pretty soon people are going to forget how it started and just remember all this buffoonery, and clowning like we're in a fucking minstrel show.

Co-Sign.

and those rappers are not the only one that's bad, you got the 50/g-unit era, the pac, biggie, big pun wanna-be's and every other bad trends, yet another reason why rap has been a disaster ever since we lost biggie, big pun, big l and especially tupac.

it's somethin in the black community though..like we just naturally wanna copy niccaz. I miss every rapper and producer having their own style and technique.

Even rza yea the wu solos had that trademark rza sound but you could tell he tailor made the production for each rapper so it gave them, each their own feel.

Shit even Organized Knoize did the same shit

Also do you think hip hop itself is going to become a lot more underground now with the genre losing popularity in the mainstream? Is that a good or bad thing?

I'm hoping for the same. When Waka was talking about how nobody wants to hear lyrics, he was absolutely right. You can sell a mil without saying anything on a track. Look at songs like "Turn My Swag On". I see people like Slaughterhouse, Jay Electronica, J. Cole, etc. catching buzzes on the underground scene. If those artists can capitalize off of that buzz they can have stellar careers. But i can only hope.

I'm not even dissin Waka like that, i just see it as the 80's again. There will be party rap played just at clubs, there will be celebrities trying to do rap and then there will be guys like Rakim, KRS, KOOL G rap, Del etc..who didn't get play in the clubs like that but still got love for those in the community.

Are you generally excited about hip hop right now?

If yes or no, explain your reasoning.

Can you genuinely say that you are VISUALLY excited about hip hop right now?

If yes or no, please elaborate on that as well.

Go into detail

Am I generally excited about hip hop, no. Here's why, The state of hip hop has been lost to this generation's obsession with age and relevancy and how the two are related in hip hop. We are no longer focused on originality and creativity, and trying to out do the last guy lyrically. But instead we celebrate the artists who may seem like the coolest to hang out with or the scariest nigga on the block. No other genre of music ever have this as an issue except hip hop. Today's younger fans feel as if hip hop should last up to thirty and at that point you are old and irrelevant. I think maybe because hip hop is the youngest genre and only genre that has changed from being based on culture and being centered around music, now is based on marketing and is centered around image. The only other genre even close to this would be pop. Yet pop was created for the very purpose of being marketable and selling an image through music. It seems as if through the popularity of hip hop we have adopted that premise as how hip hop music should operate, especially in recent years.

Unlike other genres of music that would spin off other sub-geres of that music. Hip hop has a tendancy to just blanket the entire scene for that current time as what everyone is doing. Example.

Genre: Rock & Roll

Sub Genre: Heavy Metal

Punk

Ska

Emo

etc.....

Genre: Hip Hop

Sub-Genre: ???

Hip Hop music doesn't have a sub-genre, because we only listen to what the majority or the hottest thing out is doing. If the hottest at the time is on some party shit, then all rappers is on some party and club shit. If the hottest rapper at the time is on some cocaine shit, then everyone's a drug dealer, and so on and so forth. We have lost that originality that made hip hop big in the first place, and came to a point where everyone is scared to be different, or everyone is selling the same story. The reason why the older rappers haven't left the game is because of who would be left with it.

I honestly think that niggaz need to be more creative and try some shit to stand out and be outside the box that's one of my main problems wit hip-hop

Crunk and Grime aren't sub genres? That's two off the top of my head...

If they are sub genres where's all the artist and contributions to hip hop from that sub genre?? Usually with hip hop music, some artist will have a sound that's different from everyone elses, and will call that Crunk for the south or Grime for cats over in the UK. But even on that level I can only think of one or maybe two artists for that sub genre. Not enough to have a whole genre spinoff of it.
