Take for an example education. Should the kid just stay in public school or should they go somewhere else? A child's future is almost solely based on the education you give them.
What if the kid becomes sick or injured? You are going to spend more on a sick kid than a well one.
What if the kid becomes talented in some field, shouldn't both parents support their child's abilities.

The problem with the court deciding is that shit ain't always realistic. My parents wouldn't be spending $800 dollars a month on each of us - let alone one of us.
