so a black film has to have an all black cast but a white film just has to have a white lead?

thats slanting the playing field

guardians of the galaxy is not a "white film" no more than Independence day is a black film a film like "hes just not that into you" is

We should make our own Hollywood but we will never be able to compete on the same scale

So

the lack of diversity

we really comparing Guardians of the Galaxy to baggage claim though?

those films are really white films? their huge productions with a white lead and few people of color in the cast

fast 6 had 2 white leads the rest were a multi racial cast and made 238 million here and 789 million world wide..all fast and furious has made like 937 all together

if those films you named are white films then Men In black is a black film which has 429 million

if you want to compare films make sure their similar films with similar budgets and a predominately cast of one color

Nah. that was just one example, but I wasn't comparing those specific films

A black film has to have a almost all black cast so fast 6 or men In Black are black films

Will has a white co star and Paul Walker is the star of fast and Furious films

neighbors and baggage claim are more in the same ballpark

Zach Affron who is a super star overseas had a big role in Neighbors ... Baggage Claim had no household names in it.. I don't see how you can fairly compare the two ticket sale wise

So you consider Fast an Furious a white film because Paul Walker was one of its many leads even though 75% of the rest of the cast were non whites?

Lol ...You are bending over backwards to defend these hollywood execs

It's clearly not just about turning a profit

niggas in here comparing Jurassic Park to phat beach

Gladiator to Who Made The Potatoe Salad

I'm just comparing recent numbers.22 Jumpstreet and Tammy aren't gaurdians status

but I'll find some more white comedies and rom coms and compare and it'll be the same

Only Intersteller and guardians were huge blockbusters and like I said no matter the budget the intl sales are higher for white films.

Dumb and Dumber 2 ,$35 million budget over 82 million Dom. and 49 mill intl

The equalizer 55 million and it actually did great intl it did 100 mill Dom. and 90 mill intl. (Broke the mold)(also isn't comedy)

If I stay 11 million, 50 mill dom, almost 25 mill Intl

That awkward moment 8 million 26 million Dom,27 mill intl

Get on up 30 mill budget, 30 mill Dom. 1 mill intl

A Madea Christmas 25 million DOm. 52 million , 1 mill intl

I'm not gonna list every film from 2013/2014 but that trend remains no matter the budget.

I will say that that Denzel movie did great intl, but that may not be the case for ever Denzel film.Plus I'm sure a lot of white ppl are in that movie too.

They don't focus primarily on black ppl

There's a whole bunch of big white stars in ID

fast and Furious is in no way an urban/black film

They don't focus primarily on black ppl it focused on an alien invasion, does it have to have a electric slide scene to be a black film

There's a whole bunch of big white stars in ID none bigger or more reliable than will

youre reasoning labeling of what constitutes as white films and black films is beyond reprehensible

gaurdians is a white film bc it has a white lead despite the black characters but ID was not a black flim despite having a black lead bc it had white people in it

what about I Am Legend?

it doesnt count as a black film bc those wills dog was a german shepard?

All movies without a mainly black cast are pretty much white films.

We just don't call them white movies, but call our films black movies

Just having a black person star in a film surrounded by white ppl doesn't make it a black film.

To be a black film it needs to appeal to something unique to black ppl or deal with race or deal with issues urban/black ppl relate to.

Will Smith is the lead in ID but,It's an ensemble cast mostly

there's nothing in ID that specifically relates to black ppl.

It's in no way a black film.

And no I don't consider I Am Legend a black film.

I would consider bad Boys a black film because there are 2 black leads and the comedy is very urban.

That was Will's 1st action film.he wasn't proven yet in that genre

he had only done bad Boys before that and that was a black cop buddy film

so....

black lead with ensemble cast = white film

white lead with ensemble cast = white film

all white cast = white film

animation with black voices = white film

all black cast + electric slide scene + "urban interest" = black film

Ur moving the goal post

If you are arguing that movies with non white, blk lead(s) don't fair well overseas which the execs at Sony suggested, Fast N Furious would be one of the many exceptions right? Men in black too. The Wild, Wild West

Sure we get why Hollywood isn't churning out (big budget) movies with predominantly blk casts but that's not what we are arguing here

No one including the execs in question is arguing anything other than why or why not more black actors given the opportunity to star, costar in more Hollywood big budget films

There is little evidence to suggest that had the actor who played the main character in Guardians of the Galaxy or Interstellar was replaced with a Will Smith, Denzel or even a Michael B Jordan that that movie would have not had the same success solely because of the color of their skin

but Guardians is a white film that was based on a law breaking gang of aliens saving a planet from being destroyed by a tyrant?

the stipulations you put on black films are insurmountable odds for black cinema to overcome to be successful in the eyes of naysayers like you and racist execs

You know, I'm inclined to say things lim, "We need to do xyz..," but I'm never quite sure what's already been tried..

Have We indeed tried and failed to start our own Hollywood here in the States. Has it in fact been shut down, or have we either just shied away from and/or settled for Whitey's money?

Is depending on Hollywood really the only viable option we have on the table?

I'm not naysayer.I want black films to do well, but the stats say they don't do numbers outside the country at the rate white films do.
