Someone put this into perspective better then I ever could but somes up my opinion also.
There are artists that define their times. Artists whose music transcends the limitations of its genre, its perceptions, and even criticism. The Beatles are an example. Many of their songs aren’t that great, terrible even, but they connected with an entire generation. And they wrote songs at a time when artists just did not write their own material. Their cultural significance greatly outweighs their music. Elvis, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, Curtis Mayfield, Al Green, Creedence, Joni Mitchell, Led Zepplin, The Doors, Pink Floyd, Michael Jackson, Prince, Janet Jackson, Madonna, Nirvana. All these people, as talented as they are, are known more for the influence of their music than for the music itself.
Only one rapper, one hip-hop artist, deserves to be on that list.
