Sony/BMG def took a hit ... but if you got 200million and are still left in the 100million who cares if you had an extra 100million views ?? ... now if you drop down to zero or below 1,000 then thats really saying something ...... everybody does some bit of ADVERTISING or PUSHING the consumer to buy thier products and services ...........

Its a shame they build the barrier of entry so high for indy artists when in reality its not even there... Im glad stories like this shed some light on the workings on the industry.

Next they need to do a expose on how labels like Universal's Cash Money buy 500k copies out the gate to ensure a platinum plaque...

aint no label buying 500k copies ... lol ... but they do buy copies for promotional use ... technically 85% of the albums produced are sold ... the other 15% are for promotion use ... ie for djz, buttering up contacts, employee copies etc........

lol, I remember when I was young I wanted to be a rapper to be rich and famous. Half the rappers these days aren't rich or famous. Every time I think about getting back into it, i think "for what?" The industry has changed so much from even the early 2000's.

Why does shit like this even matter? It's only so many times we as individuals can watch the videos and determine whether we enjoyed the shit or not, so why worry about who else done watched the shit.

Lol at rappers who brag about YouTube views and mixtape downloads. That's like me bragging about fresh air, it don't mean shit

It matters because which would the average sheeple rather see, a video with 10k views or one with 10 million?

Obviously the latter, and thats the fact that these big labels are working off of. Spending a couple grand for a million views is nothing when you know it will get you on the top of the charts which will lead to organic views and potential sales (hopefully more than you paid for).

It decreases the importance of underground artists without as much exposure because perception will say they are not as important cause they dont have millions of views or 500k followers or a platinum plaque.

Its the same thing with labels buying albums, if you match the 500k you know you are going to sell already (as Wayne's label does), then you are just reinvesting money earned (plus you can write it off as an expense and get back half), but now that you got certified for 1 million sold, you got the accolades and might mess around and sell a million more just cause people are wondering what the hypes all about.

People like big numbers, and the record companies have known this from day one (or atleast since the beatles). If you make something appear larger than life, people will act as if it is.

It's only now with the internet and responsibilities being spread so thin that its possible to call them out on there bullshit at several steps of the process. Thus far its been Twitter and Youtube...

That's not shocking. I mean how else can you explain all these unknowns going viral then they get a deal off it? I don't know why they don't realize that a million YouTube views will not equal a million album sales. I can watch YouTube for free but I have to pay for albums. I don't think so

Doesnt even matter since alot if not most artists are signed to 360 deals so sales doesnt really matter that much.

There have always been broke rappers, the net just allows them more widespread visibility. Back in the day you had to "make it" in your city/region first.

same shit been going on with social media remember that thread earlier this year where they checked how many accounts from rappers were real accounts or fake accounts.

the way media/rappers/fans/stans value social media power/size is vastly inflated

powerful cosign. If you have facebook, just take facebook as a example. a random person, person A can have the same mutual friends as person B. Person A might load a status saying something, it might get 1-2 likes, 1 comment but if person B say the exact same thing, his likes are going to be 25 likes, 30 comments. niggas are followers out here b

Anyone who doesn't think Label buy records to promote artist are living in a fantasy world. What's 200-500k records to a Label worth Millions of dollars? The goal is to get the "Headline" and then people think it's Big and will go buy. They have cracked down on it so it's harder to do now but it still gets done. I'm sure there are plenty of warehouses with albums sitting in them. Look at Payola and Radio, been going on for decades. This new story is sad cause everyone loves to stress Social Networking for Unsigned Artist when they aren't even getting the reviews legit themselves. It's all about perception.
