If I'm not mistaken (I could be), most Black Americans are middle class and Black America is better off today than pre-civil rights movement.

Even if Black immigrants tend to be more successful than Black Americans, it could be that they're more successful despite the racism they've encountered. Besides racism, there may be cultural factors inherited from slavery/Jim Crow racism that contribute to the disproportionate number of Black Americans who are lower class. Poverty is inter-generational, most people who are born poor will stay poor.

good point but thats why he said present day racism is not a factor. just take a look at the state of black families even in slavery they were better off and i know whole society is movin that direction but blacks are once again the torch runners.

man that's bullshit. the same can be said of ANY amerikkkans. foreigners come here and make a profit because they see the opportunities available that amerikkkans don't capitalize on because they're too lazy and spoiled. that's why there are more foreign-owned businesses in the country. the sad part is that black-owned businesses are practically non-existent in this country, esp. in predominantly black neighborhoods. in latino and asian neighborhoods they have their own businesses and redistribute the money BACK into the community but black neighborhoods you're more likely to see the same latinos and asians that don't live there owning businesses and treating us like shit. the only black entrepreneurs are pimps and dope pushers. why? like i said, blacks are fuckin' lazy just like every other amerikkkan. the only difference is that we don't do anything to change that. what happened to black nationalism?

and that's BULLSHIT. you know racism STILL exists. i'm tired of folks using that fuckin' black president shit as an excuse. if anything he should be used as motivation to be better not to say we run shit or for whyte folks to use some bullshit reverse racism tactics like they've been doing for the past 3 years trying to convince people that now they're the minority and that they're losing the country to niggers and wetbacks and ragheads. if people spent more time on their issues instead of concentrating on negativity and blaming others for their misfortunes this country would be in much better shape by now.

Immigrants is the secret word here. Just like with Asian, Hispanic, or European immigrants, there are programs in place for all immigrants that would place them in the front of the line of a lot of things that would usually be denied to natural born people of color in America. Have you ever wondered how a poor chinese family can get a store fresh off the boat?? That's because there are grants for immigrants to allow them to own their own businesses. Same can be said for the sudden increase of broken english speaking college students. Along with easy to get into foriegn exchange programs, there are also a shit load of grants and government money just waiting to be given to any immigrant willing to take advantage of the free oppurtunity.

America had the idea of making a level playing feild for those who aren't born in America, but what they have done was allow those from other countries to thrive and flourish without even trying or being exposed to even half of the obsticles natural born American citizens of color face before even getting to where they are now simply walking off the boat.

now THIS i didn't know about the grants for immigrants but it makes even more sense. i just assumed that alot of them already came here with the money they saved up.

Aren't Black People in Africa experiencing Racism on a way more harsher level than Blacks in America (harsh doesn't even apply to us really).

WHAT? racism? if so it's by the whyte settlers that don't belong there but it's not widespread. they got their own problems like tribalism and classism not to mention sexism.

i'm starting to think some of the posters are right, you are a whyte dude ignorant of certain aspects of race. that's like asking if there's sexism in the homosexual community.

No, but its becoming less pronounced.

Racism is not something that will ever completely go away, just as you cannot ever get rid of crime and violence in society. You can never achieve a 100% enlightened society.

as long as you are under and rely on a system you are subject to its faults and bullshit (racism etc)

if someone were to complain about a tyrannical parent, it would be an instinctual response to tell them to move out and get their own shit and rely on self

virtually same premise here.

Small Business Loans For Minority Entrepreneurs

Mary Crane 01.12.07, 3:00 PM ET

Have burning questions about how to run your small business better? E-mail askanexpert@forbes.net with your query, and we will track down the advice.

I am a minority business owner. Are there any financing programs or small business loans specifically for entrepreneurs like me?

No matter what your background, having a strong business plan is the most important factor in securing small-business financing, says John F. Robinson, president and CEO of the National Minority Business Council. But sometimes, says Robinson, minority small-business owners need a little extra help securing loans and investments, since "it's not necessarily a level playing field."

One of the biggest small-business loan guarantors is the government's Small Business Administration (SBA). There, small businesses can apply for loans that are guaranteed by the government.

While the SBA does not set aside any loan funds specifically for minority business owners, many of its certified lenders are sensitive to minorities' needs when making loans. Wells Fargo, for one, has pledged to lend $9 billion to Latino, African America and Asian businesses by 2012. And despite the SBA's colorblind policy, over a third of all SBA-backed loans disbursed in fiscal 2006 went to minorities.

Robinson also recommends checking out the Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA), the only Federal agency created specifically to foster the growth of minority-owned businesses. The MBDA doesn't offer any financing itself, but its national network of minority business development centers, Native American business development centers and business resource centers have relationships with local lenders.

Minority business owners should also take note of the SBA's 8(a) Business Development Program. Socially and economically disadvantaged businesses people who qualify for the nine-year program receive education and training, as well as access to government contracting opportunities. No loans are made, but in fiscal 2005, 8(a) companies won $10.5 billion in government contract money.

Outside the government, there are a number of national organizations dedicated to helping out minority small-business owners. Accion USA, a subsidiary of microlending giant Accion International, is the largest small-business lender of its kind in the U.S., making loans ranging from $500 to $25,000.

Robinson's own National Minority Business Council's Micro-Loan Fund provides short-term loans of $1,500 to $25,000 to its members. The council also recently launched its Emerging Enterprise Investment Committee, which makes equity investments from $250,000 to $5 million in qualified women-owned or minority-owned businesses.

The National Minority Supplier Development Council matches more than 15,000 minority-owned businesses with 3,500 corporations who want to purchase goods and services from them. The council also offers loans to participating small businesses through its Business Consortium Fund. Also of note: The National Urban League's Urban Entrepreneur Partnership, which has a $127.5 million fund set up to lend to qualified business owners in its program.

Entrepreneurs should also check out ethnic-specific lending organizations like the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, whose ¡Capital! loan program has made a commitment to lend more than $1 billion over the next five years to small businesses in high-growth Hispanic markets. For Native Americans, South Dakota-based First Nations Oweesta Corporation also makes loans, but only to qualified Native community development financial institutions who then go on to lend to individual Native American entrepreneurs.

Look locally, too. The Brotherhood Business Development & Capital Fund provides small business loans to underserved communities in South Central Los Angeles. On the East Coast, there is Harlem's Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone that lends to businesses in that neighborhood.

Remember that, no matter who you turn to, says Robinson, you need a good understanding of your business' needs. Don't borrow too much: Your business will eventually have to be able to pay back those loans and stand on its own.

You niggas disgust me with the excuses

'hood lookin' my liberian brother. i was gonna use some of my student loan money to start my business but this can also help me out, i just hope they don't ask for collateral like MOST business loans.

good thread ...

this whole black immigrants are doing well so racism is dead is nothing new but its flawed... i cannot see how you can say racism not an issue when whites are still paid more for doing the same work. blacks are incarcerated at a higher rate than any other rate, black women are paid the least, etc.... its ignorant to say it is not contributing factor as to why AA are struggling .... even tho classism plays a part too....

but anyways legally immigrating to america can be very difficult and sometimes expensive. therefore it is infinitely more likely that a highly skilled professional be allowed to immigrate than a low-skilled worker. the US, for lack of a better analogy, are literally skimming the cream off the top. that's why the africans who do come here are for the most part ambitious, determined, somewhat educated, hard working, driven, etc.... they are usually students, business owners, etc many of whom escaped the ghettos of the countries where the problems that have plagued the AA community and impoverished communities alike are just as prevalent ....

my point is an immigrant is someone who's specifically come to this country to capitalize and exploit opportunity. comparing any immigrant group to virtually any native-born group is like comparing the most ambitious members of one team with the entirety of another team. its ridiculous... especially considering the structural, sociological impacts of not only slavery but jim crow, etc. which might be called indirect, or historical racism... and immigrants have more economical and educational opportunities than most native americans. america does better job of assimilating immigrants than most other nations

its also good to note that subsequent generations after immigration have progressively less success in school and work. why? after a while reality sets in, the shiny new smell has gone and are just another nigga....

I'm not talking about the reason behind the reason why African Americans are doing crimes, I'm just talking about incarceration levels.

If its about 'doing the time if you do the crime' then there shouldn't be more AAs in prison as the actual levels of crimes committed as more even across the board.

So, the point I am making is that racism still exists and the prison system showcases that perfectly. Which is the point of the thread right?

Oh, and yes I guess you are right about white collared crime. Bankers stay winning :(

wow, brains and beauty. where have you been all my life shugga wooga draws?:D

You cannot compare a random group ie african Americans. to a self select group

immigrants. thats like saying that if five white NBA players beat 5 regular joe blk dudes.

in basketball and use that as arguement that blk ppl are not athletic.

those africans are the best of the best whether is academically, or work ethic and professional wise.

it is unfair to compare them to to the general blk population.
