Yes, but with each generation there is the opportunity to change the future. Just because my ancestors did something in no way binds me or my children from following in their footsteps. Each of us has the decision to make to take up the attitudes and bigotry that is handed down to us or to make our own way and form our own opinions. I for one base my opinions on my observations. If I hear that Bob down the street is so-and-so, I will go and talk with Bob and try to find out why he thinks that way. Many of us can't justify our opinions past the 'well, that's what I heard' or 'that's just the way it has always been'. I agree, the past does make the present, but it does not necessarily determine the future.

What I mean is that there is no situation that cannot be overcome, regardless of the past. If you are prepared to say that the past dooms us to a predetermined future, I would point out the many rich white folks, born into wealth and privilege that end up bums and drug addicts and the poor black folks, born into struggle and poverty that rise to greatness. These are not just random occurrences.

The past is nothing more than a blueprint of mistakes made. The past doesn't reveal all the mistakes that mankind will ever make, only those that we have made so far. We have to use our knowledge of the past and present to avoid repeating mistakes. There are many people who don't know the past, don't understand the past or just don't care. They are happily ignorant and they live out their lives in mediocrity, rarely making more than a ripple throughout their lives. They are of all shapes, sizes, colors and creeds. Their future is destined to be eerily similar to the past of many others.

I am not one of those people and I meet many others who are not either. I realize that there have been terrible things done in the name of race, religion, gender and creed and that, as with the last paragraph, these things still go on. But I spend my life seeking others to build with and to grow as people so that when I do have children, I can show them a different way, not just tell them about it. I don't want anyone to take what I say as 'the gospel'. I only want to inspire others to open their eyes and think outside the box that they live in. Granted, this is not the best place for it. But who is to say where is the right place and when is the right time? Just because it's never been done in the past doesn't mean it can't be done.

So if I implied that past has no effect on the future, it was not my intention. I mean the past does not determine the future. In other words, the bad and the good of my ancestors does not predispose me to failure or success. Only I can determine that. If there is an obstacle placed in my way, I find a way around, under, above or through it. To me, it is a different mindset. I don't expect you to accept it, I just hope you can recognize that I'm only trying to grow and help others grow. The comments that threw me off so much were Darxwell. Yeah I feel you, human nature as a whole is greedy and fucked up. That's exactly why I try to judge people as individuals, because most White people have been good with me.
