Yes, but with each generation there is the opportunity to change the future. Just because my ancestors did something in no way binds me or my children from following in their footsteps. Each of us has the decision to make to take up the attitudes and bigotry that is handed down to us or to make our own way and form our own opinions. I for one base my opinions on my observations. If I hear that Bob down the street is so-and-so, I will go and talk with Bob and try to find out why he thinks that way. Many of us can't justify our opinions past the 'well, that's what I heard' or 'that's just the way it has always been'. I agree, the past does make the present, but it does not necessarily determine the future.
