A lot of social media is based on performance activism meaning people don't actually do shit but feel a retweet or hashtag or cussing somebody out on social media equates to actually doing something. Those are the people who tend to go the hardest with their comments.

And yes people are more thin skinned but we also live in a world where shitty comments and people coming at you can literally follow you everywhere you go.
