You really can't compare the debut to mixtapes because the objectives and thought process are different. The nigga wasn't worrying about singles on his mixtapes or sequencing, better yet he could just jack other peoples beats and not worry about sample clearance. To me a big part of the reason why people even liked Warm Up and FNL so much is because he is rhyming on classic beats (Dead President, Drive Slow, Devil in a Blue Dress,Pain,Get By,etc (alot of old Kanye beats).
I don't think it has nothing about being forced or pressured to make a certain type of track, i just don't think he wanted to put out a monotonous sounding album or box himself in as a artist. I think he is smarter than people take him for, he knows that underground savior/rap prophet stigma is a guarantee for failure in commercial success. He sees that you have to walk the line of satisfying your underground fans while making commercial records.
Kendrick Lamar will probably do the same shit, them nigga ain't trying to be no fucking starving artist and trying to appease a bunch of underground fans.Who the fuck wants to be Canibus when you can be Kanye West, you can walk the line if you manage your career the right way.
The problem is underground fans stay trying to put these niggas in a box, and what the fuck is so wrong with commercial songs? You don't think Cole or Kendrick like pussy, drinking, and clubbing too.

I re-listened to this today. It got about the same quality distance as Carter 2 has to Carter 4.
Not so much that Cole world is that bad, but Warm up and FNL was that good. I'll give it a 3.5/5.... Maybe 4/5 for fan's sake.

There's still good songs after that as well. I get what marine is saying about the samples not clearing and shit but just strictly off music I don't see how you could say the album better than FNL
