Only in hip hop is being old considered a bad thing. The Rolling Stones and all these other old rock groups can tour off their old albums and the fans aren't telling them to stop making music. Hip Hop can be short sighted at times smh.

most of the older Rock groups dont make new music and try to compete with other bands.

it comes a certain age when you should just perform greatest hits for your fans

it aint about competing, it's about making music because they have a love for it, plus its good to give the fans new material.

people always say "rolling stones" and i'm sure your overall point is correct in that rock bands may be able to last longer, and yes the kids of today still like rollingstones but a lot of the people at those shows are middle aged folks, not young kids.

it's harder for a rapper to do that because once people get to a certain age they tend to leave rap alone because it inherently is a young man's game. I mean a bunch of old folks can go to a rolling stone concert and sing paint it black and reminiesce on when they were young, but not to many ppl 10 years from now will be in thei 40s or 50s at some lil john concert dropping it down and getting they eagle on, or shoving each other when ruff ryder anthem comes on. I certainly would not want to see a bunch of old middle aged grandmas getting they freak on to some 2 live crew shit.

right but there were 40 year olds at the Nas concert I went to singing along to NY State of Mind and Nas Is Like. To say cats wouldn't want to go to a concert at 40-50 is ignorant. If anything blame these rappers like Lil Jon that made music that no one would want to pay to see him perform 10-15 + years later.

Naughty By Nature, Salt N Papper, Rakim, BDK, etc all tour and I'm sure the majority of the people going to the shows are 40-50 year olds.

Are you serious? What @SheerExcellence said is basically it. It's the same shit i been tryna tell ya for the longest. You really think the majority of the people at a Naughty, Salt-N-Pepa, Rakim, BDK etc show are 40-50 y/o? Can't be serious. The majority are in their 20s & around 30 at most. The majority of them are basically a few youngins who genuinely are fans of the culture & are heads, same cats listening to Wu, Mos Def, Nas, MF Doom etc.

Most of hip-hop consumers are party heads & trend chasers. They only fuck with songs that have some what of a popularity cuz alot of them aren't really fans like that. Their the ones who'll sag their pants & wear 10 XXL tees if it's hot & if women think it's cool & then switch up & diss it once skinny jeans & tight shirts starts to pop. The ones who'll act thugged out if a hardcore rapper is popular & especially if he's liked by females & act like a queer if a queer rapper pops & females fuck with him the next week.

The majority of consumers of music period are young people. Labels are always trying to appeal to young audiences. Rock just doesn't age-hate the way hip-hop does. In the hip-hop world 35 is "old" aint shit old about a nigga that's not even 40.

Green Day's lead singer is 40....yes he's older than Nas. I don't see white folks saying Green Day need to get the fuck on though. No doubt music period is a young person's game but the older rappers and bands have just as much to offer, hell in some cases more to offer than a young audience.

Yes the majority ARE older cats in their lates 30's-40's and early 50's going to these hip hop shows, of course you'll have a fair amount of youngsters there too. When Naughty by Nature was in their prime (91-95these folks were in their 20's and 30's, so we're in 2013 now and you don't think these people still wouldn't pay to see their favorite group perform old hits like hip hop hooray, and OPP, and feel me flow etc?

As for that second paragraph you must be speaking about these new hip hop fans.

Its the maturity factor that many people have problems with. If you a 40 year old and make some grown up shit, no one will criticize you. If you 40 years old and make some Trinidad James shit, you just look foolish.

Plus in many places, its very commonplace for people to be locked up or in the grave by 25. 35 is considered ancient to many people that are 'bout that life.' They weren't meant to live that long and they have no concept of really growing up and mentally mature.

.

I agree with the bolded. That's the reason I can't really deal with 2 Chainz but at the same time Ozzy Osbourne is 60 and still wears mascara..so I'm conflicted.

I would prefer if hip-hop matured a bit commercially and ever now and again it does but I fully understand that nobody really cares to see a 40 year old cat sagging talking about his watches and rings.

I think its a misconception that only young ppl buy albums. To be honest older people buy albums because they generally have more money and don't spend it on clothes, drugs, alcohol and the club.

But older ppl only buy albums that they feel are worthy of buying.

And its mainly oldr females because they are the bread winners nowa days

Its better to just not hate on either side young or old, because either way you come out losing.

KRS sound crazy cause he old and bitter, Nelly and them look crazy now cause they are weak as shit now, who won? I guess Nelly cause he got more money at the end of the day, but both are wack for getting involved in such a silly beef in the first place and have little respect these days for that and many more reasons... This goes for every other young vs old beef that I can think of to

Niggas just be hating yo, plain and simple

rappers like 2chainz and rick ross fuck it up cause they come in the game portraying a young mans life altho they came in the came post 30 ... if they came in keeping it 100 to thier age they probably could have a jayz / eminem type career ... them dude will be rapping forever cause they cater to folks thier age as well as a younger generation ... but never tried to be 19 knowing damn well they 30 pushing 40 .....

same with the dips ... but honestly they were young ... but took so much of a haitus they didnt get a chance to let thier music grow and let the audience grow with them ... which is why i think guys like Jayz and Eminem can still do it on a large scale ....... lil wayne will have the same impact if he keeps going ....

Nelly just responded, I thought?

And if Nelly just let the shit ride and not responded people would have called him a bitch for not responding.

Rick Ross peaked in 2010 he's on the downside now, I give 2 Chainz another year or 2.

Exactly. Now you got these oldheads that are balding in the club dancing with girls half their age. Past several years, I seen older heads that are partying harder than ever, at later periods in their life. Sickening.

this makes no sense....good music is good music.

is rap the only genre where the music is new because the generation is?

why does someone have to be forced to do there greatest hits? why because they are older?

People rarely mention classic, transcendent hip hop songs in threads like this...people focus on trendy songs as if theres never been powerful, timeless rap music that appeals to all demographics and age groups.

All regions have artists that have contributed to this type of rap music.

Some rappers can and do tour well into old age based on their catalog.
