Yeah because publications like Rolling Stone and The New York Times set the standard for what is great Hip Hop. I bet you think the best Rap albums always win the Grammys too huh?

It got em from hip hop publications too....
I am of the belief that you decide what albums you like and don't like... but I do check out album reviews
Most people's favorite albums or "classics" were reviewed well... those shits have influence

shyt was a classic, and i don't know how some of yall don't feel it, given that this is a hiphop message board, hip hop purists should be takin to this album, so i don't get it...:unno

I'm not saying reviews are useless. If it's a reviewer that you know has a similar taste to you or one that gives good reasoning behind his opinions, it's all good. But reviewers in magazines don't determine what's a classic. It's why the Source even makes a point of going back and revising some of its old scores.

IMO Kanye is always overrated. He makes music that bucks the trends, and for that he's given a lot of credit as being a visionary and a musical genius. I agree he's creative and his music has often been a breath of fresh air. That said, it doesn't make it a classic. When you listen to something 5 years down the line, it doesn't matter what the musical climate was when the album was first released. Only the quality is important. I like Kanye's beats and I like how he has varied subject matter, but I don't think any of his albums are really classic. I just think they've been better and more artistic than everything else that were available at the time.

Case and point. Someone who believes it's a classic because nothing else was available.

I believe album reviews, movies reviews and book reviews are totally useless. Why take another persons opinion on art when you can form your own by listening, watching or reading? Art is supposed to be open to ones own interpretation. No?

Cool your opinion... but don't dog everyone else's for there
If people think its a classic its a classic to them
Its not like he lacks the credentials

Agree 100... art is your own interpretation and at the end of the day you should like an album on your own
But I bet your favorite album was reviewed well
To say they have no impact is a stretch

I didn't say they don't have impact. I said they are "totally useless" because no individual or media outlet should put forth an opinion on art. An interpretation? SURE!!. Quite frankly, I think the impact of reviews have had a negative impact on the ART. Especially when if we factor in bias and the practice of paying for positive reviews. You are correct . I am sure some of the albums I have enjoyed over the years have been reviewed. However, I can assure I have never read any of them.

Nah, that was not the case nor point. You just chose to look at it in that light, what i meant was that the album is a classic, and everytime an album is classic yall mention other classic albums to try and downplay or compare, there's not only one album thats classic nor an era where the rest that come after can't be considered neither... Shyt was a classic, defitinely, the problem is yall will compare it to Illmatic and shyt, and its been agreed that Illmatic is a classic, but it doesn't make Ye's shyt any less of a classic neither...

And again, i stress, i don't see the problem yall see wit this, Kanye at that stage in his career, still in his peak, made a pure hiphop album, which turned out to be a masterpiece, so well put together and on some real hiphop shyt, grimy beats and this nigga was rhymin, not auto-tuning or none of that, he kept that old skool formula with a his own artistic direction implemented, all the way HIP HOP album and was able to makeclub bangers all at the same time...

I ain't even tryna stan, but songs like Power and shyt, these nigga went back to the roots on some Afrika Babambaataa shyt and implemented that into his music and pulled it the fuck off....And even on watch the throne you can see the influence that MBDTF had on it, it clearly has yeezy's touch all over that shyt, he really making and introducing that pure hip hop sound and at the same time able to get today's audience to bump the shyt...WTT was a hell of an album, a few tracks fall short and i weren't really checkin for it at first, but they def did their thing on there.

Going to say it isn't a classic. I will say however, that it will be one of the albums we will remember from last year for years to come.

I'm not dogging anyone. I just don't think "magazine reviewers loved it" is the end all be all in determining a classic.

I got no problem with Kanye. I just don't think the album was classic material. Simple as that. When people make comparisons with other classic albums, it's not so much about the albums themselves but the impact and longevity they had. People still talk about the certified classics as if they came out yesterday. That is a testament to their true classic status. Outside of this topic, I haven't heard anything about MBDTF and it's only been a year. I'm not saying the album is bad, it isn't. And I'm not saying it doesn't have quality tracks, it does. But I don't believe it's a classic, and even it if was, it would be too soon to tell at this point anyway.

Before I give an honest opinion on Kanye's album, I'm going to say this much. I've always been a Kanye fan, from CD till now. Personally I think Late Registration was his best work of art, and to me this album was his worst and far from a classic. That's not to say it wasn't a good album, but it just wasn't as good as Kanye's first three albums. Personally I think 808's was a better album than this. There are some hot songs on this, my two personal favorites being Blame Game and Devil in a New Dress (Ross shitted on that) but between all the overhyped production, the numerous features, and Ye's obsession with Amber Rose, I think it took alot away from the album. I still listen to it, and I can't hate on the quality of the songs, but the album itself wasn't good.

A modern day classic without a doubt IMO... That album is pure genius and distinguishes Kanye and his level of artistry and everyone else in rap music

is genius the new word for classic?

seems like everyone is throwing that word around...

oh and Kanye had his chance to have a certified classic with Graduation because Graduation killed
Gangsta Rap and birth the music we hear today... even though Graduation is not his best work...
it has the impact that any other Classic album has

You know that's the definition of classic right???

I think cats on this board confuse a CLASSIC album with a PERFECT album

Even Classics from back in the day could have been better but that doesn't take away their classic standing. There are tons of "classic" singles and albums that I dont like but I can't take away their classic title because they stood the test of time.

A lil Overrated...This is Kanye at his most demonic, brash, and emotional...

Musically,Some Tracks are Perfectly produced and spell binding(So Appalled,All of the lights)..Lyrically its not mind blowing...Although he did body "Gorgeous",he should of put that with more Soulful production, that track had ZERO drums...

In my opinion,Nope not a classic and a lil disjointed
