I'm not sure what your point is, but let me clarify my point;

In the 90s (I'd say starting in the 90s, let's use 1990 as a starting point) the channels that rap music traveled through were;

1. The Source Magazine (every city got the same issue)

2. The Arsenio Hall Show (every city got the same episode)

3. Local R&B and Top 40 stations (each city was a lil different)

4. Music videos on MTV and BET (every city got the same episode)

The first Internet file sharing service was Napster in 1999.

But in New York City there were other channels that weren't available in other places. There was a video show called Video Music Box that started in 1984. They played Rap videos. So if you lived in New York you were exposed to rap videos that weren't played on MTV and BET. You'd be exposed to underground New York videos and you'd be less likely to see West Coast or Southern videos. You can call it "East Coast bias" or regionalism or whatever but I'm just telling it like it is. There was also a show called The Box where you could call in and request videos. Record labels in New York would have a staff of 20 people in a room calling and requesting a video over and over again. As a result there were very few West Coast videos (if any at all) that got played on The Box.

Starting in the late 80s/early 90s New York DJs started making mix tapes. The idea of a mixtape or a compilation of new music wasn't a new idea but New York DJs had connections with the rappers themselves and the record labels so they could get exclusives and freestyles that DJs in the other 49 states couldn't get. New York DJs could get songs months before they appeared on any retail format (cassette single, 12" single or CD single).

As a result, Hip Hop fans in New York relied less heavily on MTV, BET and The Source and stayed up to date through Hot 97, mix tapes, Video Music Box and The Box.

When you think about it, it makes more sense to buy a mixtape than buying an album. At any given moment there's at least 10 new albums; Wu tang, Biggie, Nas, Jay Z, 2Pac, KRS One, Pete Rock and CL Smooth, A Tribe Called Quest, Big L and Common. Rather than buying all 10 albums, a Hip Hop fan would buy a 90 minute mixtape which contained the best 2 or 3 songs from each album along with 2 or 3 freestyles or exclusive songs that were unreleased. If you buy two or three mix tapes then you've pretty much got all the bases covered. Chances are you'd have the best songs from each album.

I know in Boston I used to hang out with guys from New York and more often than not they'd have a mixtape rather than an actual album. From my recollection, people from Boston would be more likely to buy albums whereas people from New York would be more likely to have mix tapes. Thats how I remember it.

So my point is that if you lived in New York City in particular its entirely possible that you didn't watch videos on BET or MTV. There's people that I can remember seeing in The Source that had perms and Jheri curls but I'd never actually heard their music and judging from the way they looked in the ad, I had no desire to hear their music.

Also, consider that Hip Hop started in New York. A lot of the stuff coming from The West Coast or The South sounded "foreign" in a bad way.

The fact of the matter is that Pac got physically run out of New York and tried to "Clap Back" through song and dance. He ran his mouth, aligned himself with gangbangers (hustling backwards) crossed the wrong people, made enemies and got himself killed.

All of that shit could have been avoided if he took Biggies advice and stayed away from those grimy dudes that Big told him to stay away from.

As far as the actual beef, New York won and that's absolutely indisputable. The sheer quantity of music that came out of New York made California look like a hick town with one label. The quality is subjective but Death Row only released seven albums in 5 years while New York released HUNDREDS of albums and THOUSANDS of mix tapes and proceeded to shut the game down with Life After Death, Ma$e, Puff Daddy & The Family, Jay-Z, Nas, Mobb Deep, DMX, Ja Rule, and 50 Cent. Out of everybody Pac dissed, besides Chino XL, they all had long successful careers and are still making records (Mobb Deep, Jay Z, Nas).
