Why don't you just stop using the word entirely and stop cursing entirely?

Don't fake and change it up when you around someone you want to respect or impress because your negative tendencies are still there and you still calling your brother a nigga, cursing at him, and its still hurting Ms Angelou's heart.

Real Live Common is an artist and outta respect for his craft you gotta just take it on the head Maya

u r WHITE stfu ya opinion dont mean shit..,,.

Honestly, this is kind of.....

She should have most def spoke to him privately. I hate when the older generation criticizes the more positive generation in public because it then puts two positive black people against each other especially with the media jumping into it. They should have had a sit down conversation about the matter and agreed to disagree. I personally feel that Common using the N-Word in the song is a mute issue. I understand where she's coming from considering her background and how she came up I guess, but once again, going to a media outlet and speaking out isnt the right way to do it because it adds elements that dont need to be there.

or he could have been honest about his intentions.or he could have let her hear the song before it was released. you can't fault her for wanting her poem to stand for more.

i think that is wat happen'd ms angelou probably just let common use da poem & trust;d that he wouldnt taint her work wit such negative thangz that she was against i think it was just a miscommunication between da 2 on da final product,..,

She shared her surprise about the language and praised his genius, then she let the public know she will not allow Willie Lynch to come between her and Common. The media-outlet she used to show unity with Common was BET.

Why did she have to make it public though, holler at the man on the downlow.

Her being a cultural icon, civil-rights legend, and Pulitzer prize winner she most likely wanted the public to know that she had no prior knowledge that her poetry would be on a song with language like "Bitches" "Hoes" and "Niggas"....our grandmothers are like that.

You aint understand. Folks like myself(self promo waits for hate), Common, Mos Def and others are more for the cause and the struggle, so much so that she really felt like he was a positive influence to allow him to use the poem. Like I said I understand where she comes from and what she means, but once again it just sheds a negative light on the folks who are still trying to further the black cause in this day and age. Like I said, with the way the MEDIA ruins everything, it can put two positive black people against each other which does NO good for any of us.

But if you give a poem to an artist who is in Hip Hop, shouldn't she have made sure this was someone who didnt use a word like that? I dont know, she gave him the poem, but says she never heard him use it. I'm sure she hasn't. If he's met her before, obviously he has, he's going to speak to her with respect and has no reason to use that word or profanity at all. I understand her point, but I'm pretty sure he told her he wanted to use the poem for his album. I dont think the overall MESSAGE of the song is diluted however, because its a powerful song.
