I just read that a bunch of wii U's went flying off the shelves after this release. They said most were bundled with this game lol. They would have been ahead if they would have released some of the big games earlier instead of filler. Smash brothers was supposed to drop shortly after the system dropped.
Metroid and zelda gone be gone be a problem when they finally drop. Now all they need is some 3rd party support. If they had that from the start they would have been shitting on the competition. Whoever makes the decisions for them needs to step down lol.
Sometimes I do feel Nintendo is damned if they do and damned if they don't with some people.
Mario Kart 8 is selling at the rate it's selling because it's the first killer app they've dropped that appeals to online gamers (the majority of today's game market). Similar to Gears of War when it dropped on Xbox 360. So naturally it will cast the widest web. Doesn't mean that there was some type of software drought. Clearly they sold over 6 million units because there were already games available for Nintendo fans on the platform. People just need to educate themselves and do the research if they're ignorant about that. Nevertheless just like with any new platform patience is a virtue.
Nintendo is also a company notorious for putting quality > quantity. They don't put their games out until they're really polished and ready to go which is why their games are always killing it with the critical reception. Monolith Soft's X the game you talked about in the first page isn't out because it's just not ready. It's still unfinished it's not because they're trying to purposely hold back. It's a pretty ambitious game (rumored to be an MMO) and Nintendo won't force Monolith Soft to come up with something half assed so it's still being polished so that it's the best game it could be in the end.
Super Mario 3D World, Pikmin 3, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Mario Kart 8 etc. didn't drop during or after the launch period because they simply weren't ready. If Nintendo had rushed them out to create the illusion of quality they would've been called out for it when the games didn't live up to their potential. No way those games would be the critical darlings they were if Nintendo had taken that route.
From a quality standpoint as it stands now Nintendo has published some of the best reviewed retail titles of the 8th gen so far (Super Mario 3D World, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD, Mario Kart 8, Pikmin 3, New Super Mario Bros. U, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, LEGO City Undercover, The Wonderful 101) in that order on Wii U.
That's not even getting into how they have the most varied library out of the 3 platforms right now between retail and their eShop. You could find everything from quality fighters to racers, to party games and platformers, action & adventure titles, open world games and RTS & puzzlers on that platform right NOW. Can't really say that for PS4 or XB1 right now.
Hell people always harp on about the third party situation but they still have one of the most unique 3rd party offerings this gen so far (Zombi U) on their platform which is also the best showcase of the gamepad to date. On top of having the best ports (according to critics and audiences) of many other third party titles (Need For Speed: Most Wanted, Rayman Legends, Deus Ex: Human Revolution DC, Monster Hunter 3, Tekken Tag Tournament 2: Wii U Edition).
In terms of sales when it comes to current gen Nintendo has 7 exclusive titles that have broken the 1 million plus barrier while Sony and Microsoft only have 2 each respectively.

That means 1/6 or more of the current Wii U install base owns those games which is the best attach rate ratio for any Nintendo home console since Gamecube. While they won't replicate the Wii success (nothing will not even PS4) surely they'll be ok.
The rest of 2014 is looking bright for Wii U if you want quality retail games from reliable developers (Bayonetta 2, X, Super Smash Bros. Project CARS) and we don't even know what's in store yet for 2015 but I'm positive we will by this time next week after E3.
This current gen (8th gen) is just really getting started and Nintendo already has the upper hand on the others in terms of game library at this very moment. It's a marathon not a race.
