Let's keep it real, the college students are the new streets nowadays!

College students always had always a big influence on hip hop even from the early beginnings, Kanye just brought this back with College Dropout.

Hip Hop's biggest and most influential label Def Jam was founded by Russel Simmons and Rick Rubin in his dorm.

Public Enemy's Chuck D went to college and played rap on college radio station long before it was aired on radio and tv. It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back is still the GOAT rap album, above Paid in Full, Illmatic and AmeriKKKas Most Wanted.

Will Smith got accepted by MIT, Ice Cube, KRS-One, Redman, Ludacris, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Diddy went to College.

Rap started with Block parties, but college students had an important role in the movement. The overrated street bullshit talk just started with arise of gangsta rap and commercialization of the genre in the 90s.

StillDreaming making some good points. And it's not limited to colleges with "lower status" - walk on campus at Duke and the streets of Durham are not far away.

And, from the view of a math PhD, financial mathematics is highly overrated. The mathematician will in some way or another always answer to the economists, that's just how it goes. With that said, f*ck a hedge fund lol...(just a side note)

College helped but the streets kept Hip Hop alive. The commercialization of rap is when the suburbs started getting involved and we started seeing rappers selling 4-5 million albums. Like i said b4 College radio at one time was basically the only time u even heard rap on the radio. Artist wasnt even getting any airplay the only way u wud know about someone was by word of mouth within the streets. I fell the college helped argument but niggas is bugging if they think the streets werent the dominate factor for keepn rap alive.

In all honesty in a lot of cases the "streets" are also apart of the college scene. Just about all colleges have what we call locals. Alotta ppl at these college parties(the ones off campus especially) are from the local hoods in the area. Even just walking around on campus you'll see alotta ppl who don't even go to the school hanging out or hunting for bitches. The soul of the streets is present in a lot universities and colleges......hell if you're a dope boy you'd be crazy not to have clientele there. Your average college student is supporting the weed man on the outskirts of campus. The streets don't have all the say but they damn sure have a strong influence

Co-sign, great post

So college students put gucci mane and wacka flocka on top?

Exactly!! You could also add Jeezy, Rick Ross, Ti, Yo Gotti, etc. College may have been the one that helped certain artist careers but at the same time i think College was a nonfactor in other careers

Clubs down South put them on top. That's where most street niggas are.

White Folks who control the airwaves and economics of Rap put the Waka's, gucci's and Ross's on top.

That too.......I just didn't want to sound redundant. Thing about it, everyone should know the bolded but they're in denial about it.

What the fuck kinds of Black Men attend college these days? I could put together a pretty decent list of MC's that have college experience or have graduated college. All of which, wouldn't have Lupe's and Kanye's pussy boy image. Now Black Men have to be metro sexuals and wear blouses to attend college. WOW!!

Can't co-sign that at all Gucci Mane, Waka, and even Yo Gotti make more money touring than Lupe or Cudi and that's been for the last five years.

Gucci and Waka been touring all up north, I wish Lupe would be touring down south like that LOL

Exactly what I've been saying in this thread without trying to offend these nigga's favorite MC's. Street niggas attend college and smart too( I'm a prime example, bachelor of multimedia communications)...it just makes me wonder about the purpose of this thread.

The last two major movements that happened in hiphop were because of the college kids, and that's Kanye West and Lil Wayne, the streets don't dictate shit no more. These mfs don't buy shit period, these college kids are the ones spreading these artist name word of mouth and buying most of the albums. Why do you think the Lupes, Kanyes, Cudi's,etc can consistently tour or not put out big singles and still maintain.

I agree somewhat...

Wiz Khalifa / J. Cole / Lupe / Kanye / Ross (even him) blew up off the college circuit...

Most new artists are building their brands online. Most real street niggas aint on the internet enough to make much of a difference. And if they are, most real street niggas not gonna sift through Youtube to find the next internet phenom. What usually happens is, certain artists build a buzz & its the college students, the high school kids, the hipsters spreading the word & once the fire catches on enough online, it moves offline to see if the hood/bitches/clubs is feeling it.

Example:

J. Cole - Dropped The Come Up, The Warmup. Only niggas online (basically students) knew of him. Got signed to Roc Nation. Appeared on Blueprint 3. Released Who Dat & Dropped FNL & now everyone (people offline) acting like they been down with dude when he been out for 2 1/2 years.

Wiz Khalifa - Dropped Numerous Mixtapes. Niggas online knew of dude since "Say Yeah". Most average hood niggas aint never heard of dude. Signed to Atlantic. Dropped Kush & Orange Juice. Dropped "Black & Yellow" & now everybody (people offline) frontin like they been with this nigga when he been bubblin online since 2006 being pushed mainly by cats who be on the web.

So yes.....in a since, the "streets" have moved from gangstas on the corner to students on the web.

Knowing the OP's posting style it's a way to separate himself as, their are many Black Men who use college to one up brothers from the hood. It's a way to make themselves feel better about being Pussy. When the fact of the matter is, you can have a college a education, be nice with your hands and know how to shoot a legal firearm.

You right and you wrong. Since like '08, Brick Squad been hittin college campuses like crazy. That's when Gucci was startin to get accepted by white kids down here. Same thing with Yo Gotti. They went from the hood circuit to the next level. That's why they make so much money now, even though they were makin a lot of money already compared to all the other rappers like them down here. Waka was raping college homecomings left and right for their budgets. But even so, Lupe and Cudi tour around the world. I think Gucci might have gone to Europe on ce or twice, but niggas like Lupe and Cudi been doin that shit basically since the beginning of their careers. From goin on tours with Kanye and Jay to doin it themselves when their singles popped off. Them niggas get international money, and that's a whole nother level as well.

I don't know about J-Cole. But Whiz was doing Hole in the wall clubs in philly and open mic nights before he even saw a college campus. I know because, my homie is a promoter in Philly and was booking Whiz for Pepsi's and Doritos. Once he got a buzz from the STREETS then he was able to go digital. College kids aint do shit. They were late coming into the game.

Bruh....do you know how many lame ass rapping niggas do Open Mic nights in every city in America. Any rapper could do a show in some hole in a wall club. Its not really about who heard him first, its about who blew him up. All his releases (mixtapes) were online through Rossum. Most hood niggas not strolling through Soundclick, DatPiff & Youtube for some unknown ass artist from the middle of Pittsburgh. Its college students, high school kids & hipsters. Niggas heard his shit enough that they gave him a listen. Nigga dropped "KOJ" & Black & Yellow & he blew up. I mean fuck.....Kush & Orange Juice was a trending topic on Twitter for a week. That's promotion right there. How many hood niggas you know on Twitter & shit.
