During the Golden Era of hip-hop the mainstream was diverse. Can't really say that now. Yeah, the genre is diverse to many of us because we don't mind and we know how to look for music that appeals to us.
But I'd say more than 90% of the rap I listen to on my phone/ipod will never be played on the radio. That wasn't the case during the Golden Era. Most of the stuff on the radio many of us owned on tapes/cds.
And that's what differentiates the Golden Era from any other time period in rap. It was the closest we'll ever get to a proper balance with the mainstream portion of the genre.
