If you listen to "For Free?" & "For Sale?" you pretty much get what the internal struggle of the album is all about ... basically as a artist as a man in this country you work hard to cultivate and craft your art .. your skill ... whatever that may be .. so you take pride in it .. and obviously place value on it ..and since you don't wont to feel exploited .. you will go out of your way to make sure your not used "for free" in a literal sense ..

HOWEVER ... this society has its way of getting you by hook or by crook .. so when you go into "For Sale" its another internal struggle that an artist ..a man .. has to deal with ... you have to ask yourself .. well if your not for free .. then you must be "for sell" ... correct?? it has to be one way or another ... but the question is ...is there really a difference?? is the choice ultimately not just a double edge sword?? sure you get the money the fame the popularity .. all of these trinkets that the character "Lucy/Lucifer" has to offer ... but now your someones property .. your under someones control because your indebted to their cash flow for support ... you owe them your time your energy your life in a way ... and while most people will sign up for that all day .. there's real cost that come with that .. the detachment from the place & people that made you ...you... not being their for your sister who gets pregnant as a teenager when your preaching to crowds about self awareness ..having friends get killed and you cant even visit them in the hospital because of "obligations"

This album is essentially Kendrick explaining the complexities of what happens when you pluck a young black man out of an ostracized cast way land ..give him fame gratification and riches and tell him to adjust to this new world on the fly .. he is trying to deal with balance of "normalcy" especially coming from such humble beginnings ... cleverly he correlates his tale with that of another "rose from concrete" so to speak in Pac.. pretty much Pac is his guidance ..and he's telling the story of the album to him in bits and pieces stopping where every he see's a simularity with a situation Pac also went thru.. leading up to the end where he finally gets to talk to his guru ..but obviously a person can only lead/teach you so far before its time to tackle life on your own ..and that's where the album ends

My nigga "props" for breaking that shit down like that.

Fashiggadale .... i'd love to hear some other opinions on what people are getting from the album on a thematic level ... what do people believe the record is about?

thats what this place is supposed to be about ... probably gotta let it sink in a couple more days to get some real discussions

I don't know maybe i'm blowed like a muthaphucka but it sounds he rapping to 2pac. I say that because how it went into the interview. I don't know maybe i'm buggin'.

Its a rehash of the same ol, internal struggle, saint vs sinner schtick. the bitches are simultaneously the evils that tempt him and the object of his desire. he vacilates between a personal narrative and an overall critique on the collective black psyche. i "get it" i just dont dig the execution. just not as "deep" as it tries to be passed off as. and again...the whole "lucy/lucifer" metaphor is sooooo half-cocked as he is promoting the luciferean mindstate subtly but its hard to catch because hes throwing race out there...because race is a "hot" topic now so he basically HAD to go there. to pimp a butterfly you gotta catch it in the cocoon..while its sleep ...during the tender stages of its development. its some elementary shit yo... its made to seem deeper than it is

On first listen...this album is a 4.5.I'm loving it. Amazing topics touched upon and fantastic production. It sounds more like Section 80 than Good Kid

King Kunta is a anthem. Been playing it almost 24 hours straight. Just dropped my BM off at her first day of her new job blasting the fuck outta King Kunta. She was maaaaaaad. Lol.

It's crazy to see ppl not liking the production. Pure musicianship going on here. Dudes in the studio with saxophones, trumpets, bass guitars, pianos, guitars, real drums, & Rhodes. I feel like my Jazz loving Dad would appreciate this body of work. Guess it's a style thing.

They been eatin these fast food beats for too long! When a gourmet chef cooks em up something decadent they can stomach it!

FALSE. When you say MOST other emcees I think you mean mainstream. Being that I listen to niggas that been consistently treating these topics it pales by comparison. Just "Clap" by Pharaoah or hell... "Im Black" by Styles P are better as singles alone then that whole album overall in giving one a "feel" of the black experience. Like I said I "get it" but its not novel and its not top tier in that realm at all. And i repeat... you NEVER go full 3stacks and thats just what he did on this jawn. Its just more glaring because he stopped hugging waynes nuts so tight on this one

Sooooo its not packaged and presented as some esoteric deep shit? Lucifer is a main antagonist in a thematic album but its not supposed to be rated honestly in that realm? FOH... excuses excuse. Its deep but dont expect it to be too deep. It sounds good to smart people that listen to it repeatedly but dumb people wont like it when they first listen because we shouldnt expect music to sound good the first time we hear it. I like it cause its different. Even though I dont know jack shit about jazz, its sounds so jazzy. GTFOHWTBS..EXCUSES EXCUSES LOL
