What is mixing? I always see it onalbum credits but I never looked it up. Im not trying to be funny or whatever. I honestly don't know

Mixing of vocals and production. Volume levels, sound fx use (echo, reverb,) etc...

That's the best way I can explain it, maybe someone else who has a better grasp of it can tell you more...

Yea and then mastering which is Basically like polishing a car after being cleaned. Some people do it really well, others not so much but it's hard to tell unless you're listening with good equipment or it's just flat out terrible. For example, go back and listen to 36 Chambers, sounds like shit lol but obviously thats the sound they wanted. I'm still confused as to why they remastered OB4CL and not that album.

Mixing is during the creation of the beat, mastering is the finalization after all the instrumentation and vocals is done.

But if the producer is sending a beat to the artist they probly have their own engineer to mix/master the vocals.

Mixing is more specific to tweaking each individual sound in a beat (adding reverb to a snare, phaser to a guitar riff, making the 808 thump more, making hi hats quieter so claps can stand out more, putting effects on a sample, etc)

Mastering is mostly to polish the song and make sure the vocals blend well with the beat and make sure there is no distortion so whether u listen on headphones or car the quality is still as smooth as possible to the max potential of what u play it on.

Mastering is tough bc u have to maximize the volume of the track and all its elements without distorting while balancing the frequencies of all the hi/middle/lo level sounds so they dont clash with each other while making sure the vocals dont sound too loud or quiet for it all. It can mean the difference between your shit sounding underground n ur shit sounding like a radio quality hit.

One thing about California music is:

1. Your delivery gotta be on point

2. You gotta be saying something ppl relate to

3. The beat gotta be hard hitting

If you got all three of the above, niggas gon bump your shit.

I fuck wit a couple tracks off Damn but a lot of them other songs get boring, I lose interest, and it amounts to a nigga saying a bunch of stuff over a beat in the background. Even if he is saying some deep or slick shit, after i hear it once, I go back to the music I feel tho....

Schoolboy Qs delivery > Kendricks lyricism. Sorry IC ;(

That's the same for music that's taken seriously everywhere. That's not just a Cali thing

My point was related to one that Kendricks music doesn't get as much play in Cali as outsiders would expect. His lyricism is good but his delivery is average at best....and that is why.

Lyricism (his strongest attribute) was not in that list.

Thats a damn lie. I just came back to Cali from vacation and all ive heard people bumpin up and down the streets is Kendrick's album

I flew out to Vegas last year for a bachelor party last summer. My cousin, who lives in LA was invited to. During that same weekend Trey Songz had a concert at a club, so this girl he was dating came up with her homegirls. Long story short, I heard at least 6 Kendrick songs played by LA people (born and raised) while I was rolling around with them or chilling in a hotel suite.

I think what there trying to say is "Hood/Gangsta" niggas aint bumpin kendrick shit on the regular.....or these niggas living in a bubble

See his momma is on my side

This his best album so far B)

TPAB > DAMN

Say kendricks discography is like Will Smiths filmograpghy....

GKMC is like his "Independence Day" (a classic)

DAMN is his "I AM Legend"

TPAB is like "7Pounds" its a great movie and powerful especially on 1st watch. But u cant watch 7Pounds everyday like I AM Legend or Independence Day. U needa be in the mood for that.

....did that make sense?

TPAB stayed on rotation for me. I really didn't have a problem with the Jazz Rap/ Neo-Soul feel. I think TPAB is on the same quality level as DAMN
