Joe Budden: “Hip-Hop has the worst audience of all genres.”

I get the point Joe's making with fans, but to be fair the artists don't help either. I mean he's talking about people disrespecting Ja but 50 took that guy to the cleaners and came out on top, that's why Ja has lost so much respect, battles like that don't happen in other genres. Also artists will come out and diss other big artists such as Jay-Z who can be seen as a legend of the game just trying to make a name for themselves, nobody's gonna see a new band coming out disrespecting the rolling stones trying to get a foothold in the rock scene!

Real talk cats need to stop just blaming the labels and artists and realize that it's a joint effort from the fans , labels , and artists in the destruction of hip-hop

i cant think of any legends in the game besides tupac right now that are really respected by the majority of hip hop fans.

because pac spoke for the have nots who didn't have that voice and was probably one of the few rappers who was willing to die for his respect

I don't think artist fall off, i think it's more fans who put artist in a box of when they first heard the artist and judge all their work afterward to that piece of work. If ya'll don't give the artist room to grow, of course ya'll gonna yell the fall off nonsense, ya'll want these rappers to stay young forever.

Sometimes i wonder if these fans think they're gonna be 21 forever. Alot of the fall off or old talk comes from each generation wanting their own rappers from their generation to replace or be placed with the legends who came before. You know how these dumb fans are, they act like there are 5 spots in rap, and numerous rappers can't occupy or be relevant at the same time.

I think it's more the fans than the artist...rap/hip-hop fans are the only people that seem to place no value in growing up, maturing, etc....I mean you got 35-40 year old rappers still talking about poppin bottles in the club instead of actual real life shit that their fans who grew up/older with them could now relate to...rappers are always trying to compete for that 106 & Park 15-21 audience and it makes the genre and music stagnant because all the most popular artist are nothing but reincarnations of the last "big thing"...and rap fans can't seem to get their minds around the fact that it's ok to like more than 1 type of rap...it's like if you tell somebody you like Plies it's impossible to say "I listen to Rakim too"...

Lol, people say "rock" groups fall off all the time though.

Shit indie fans are fickle as shit, once they get a hint of one of their favorite bands getting a little more known then they would like the fans turn against them.

Every music genre has fans that call bands "sell outs", or that they fell off.

Go visit absolutepunk.net or sites of that nature, niggas hate up there just like people hate on here.

It just boils down to the fact that the average person listens to bad music, IMO.

And doesn't feel like getting educated on the genres of music that they listen to.

Yes I agree that there are fickle fans/haters in every genre but none so much as the hip hop fans. The Rolling Stones can still sell out STADIUMS, Led Zepplin, The Who, Ozzy can still sell out a tour. The Beatles will out sell any and everybody today. This is because the majority of rock fans appreciate their legends.

And the whole "most people listen to bad music" is subjective. Pac sold tens of millions of records, is he "bad music" so did the Wu, Biggie and Jay.

To certain point I agreed.

But I can’t deny the feeling that if he was pushing 250,000 unit on the 1st release week his opinion wouldn’t be as particular

How is he wrong?

Besides Rock fans, Rap fans are the worst fans of any genre bar none, and the primary reason rap's audience is wack is because the audience is ignorant of history. Talk shop with the most vocal dumb-ass Rock music fan, and they can at least argue a point with 20, 30, and even 40 years worth of awareness about the genre. In the 21 years since I've been an active rap music fan, I have only encountered a handful of people offline with knowledge or awareness of the genre beyond what's on MTV/BET. Furthermore, most rap fans aren't "fans" beyond a hot beat. Everything but the most basic of wordplay goes over their heads. Metaphor is wack-ass Rock group or some "White shit." And if it ain't grippin' the pound, squirtin' the tool, dickin' her down, and ridin' round, most can't even focus on more than four sentences at one time before being "bored."

Look up a rap song's lyrics. Most of the "fans" who transcribe them don't even understand basic concepts of writing like metaphors, so they bastardize the lyrics with the "rhymes" and never ask, "Hmm, why would SNOOP DOGGY DOGG say, 'You a fee. And I'ma big dog. I'll scrap you off my pog with my muthafuckin' hogs' as opposed to 'You's a flea. And I'm the big dog. I'll scratch you off my balls with my muthafuckin' paws' like a, you know, DOG? LIKE THE WORD IN HIS NAME?" Hell, besides Rapgenius.com, the darkest dungeons of the Reason, and Sohh, I don't see any real intelligence in the fan base and the real intelligence that is there is snuffed by ageism and/or racism because God forbid a well-read 13-year-old knows more Rap history than a 30-year-old dude who listened to local radio and went to a Run-DMC Reunion concert or a White suburban kid buried himself in the underground and bought anything with the word rap on it. No. We're Black. We're Hip-Hop by D.N.Aw shut that bullshit up.

Glad to see Budden is finally paying attention to the media training Def Jam invested in him, though, and he didn't call a spade a spade and note the fanbase is (at least loudest vocally) represented by fucking retarded mouthbreathers.

Joe Buddens mad at the fans cuz he doesn't sell no records.

Every genre has stupid fans. Every genre has a handful of acts that are trash that made it big. Every genre has a handful of acts that are dope that never made it big. Don't hate the fans cuz you don't sell. Make a hit.

Nah, that ain't it all.

He's right. You young 'uns are dumb as shit.

20 years ago, no one was clowing the Sugarhill Gang and Afrika Bambataa, even if their time had passed. We still RESPECTED the path they blazed.

I think its a simple solution. If we as so called hip hop fans wouldve showed and raised the younger kids on what real hip hop is/was they would demand it, But the 80's babies gotta lead the way. I let my kids listen hip hop and decide themselves, it sjust a matter of, is there gonna be an avenue for the younger kids to listen to a Slick rick, an LL cool J going towards the future. And alot of the older cats arent touring, they are trying to do other shit OTHER Than rap. But some of the quality has fallen fell off so bad, we were ALL dying to hear new shit, but forgot to reinforce what was solid in the past.

Jay-z, Nas, the WU will be exceptions and will always be able to tour. Would niggas really go to an LL concert? Or is LL so done with music that he wouldnt bother?

Excellent post

Nas and the Wu will forever be untouchable and they will tour till theyre 60......but i cosign Joe Budden. we brought this on ourselves. The fans of the culture, majority of them support destructive, uninspiring and often evil music. How we support and let european techno musik infused in our beautiful culture? and the so called hiphop fans are buyin this music. smh!!!!

Hiphop is dead

The thing is most hip hop fans are ignorant to other genres and we see it here in this video. That chick acting like every other genre of music is perfect and full of rich people. Most country artists grew up in some poor ass town with no money, sure not as bad as living in the hood but still the reason they sing is to make it out their small ass town. Most rock and roll stars grew up without a parent or had parents who hated them and treated them like shit. And there have been mad rock stars that have died before 30 because of drugs/accidents etc. Most pop stars are from a poor family and become big as teenagers but by the time they are adults they are no longer relevant and on drugs too.

Most younger hip hop heads and even some older ones (like the ones in the video) don't know the history of music in general they don't know BLACK people made the roots for what is now rock based off their advancements of blues/jazz etc. They don't know what they talk about when they generalize other genres. Shit most rappers and hip hop fans listen to fall out boy or Taylor Swift or some mainstream band and think they experts on country or rock.

This isn't a just a music issue though... This is a society issue. The African American community in general (which happens to be the majority of the hip hop fanbase) has an HUGE issue with respect of Elders and deference. We have become the culture of cynics... It became really cool to discredit someone no matter who they are. So its a root issue that affects that particular music genre... but lets not get it twisted its an "issue deeper than Rap"
