J.Cole's "For Your Eyez Only" Rating Thread

This was my analogy of it on Facebook. Last week he came out swinging like Mike Tyson with "Everybody gotta die" and "False prophets", but then the album came out yesterday and it was on some Floyd Mayweather light jab shit.. Effective, but not as major as I expected.

I'm not a big Cole fan, but I've always respected his talent in rapping and beat making. Having said that, this album is just awful. I gave it a full, open-minded listen and was pissed for giving my time to this. It was depressing and sounds like his weed is too strong for his mind. Sometimes, not all of your thoughts need to be put in a rap. It kinda reminded me of that Capital STEEZ video when he was smoking on the couch and watching all the negative shit going on. Just real Doomsday type shit. No problem with being aware, but I thouhght he was a better artist and he missed the mark. I thought it was also a hoe move to bait-and-switch with 'False Prophets' not being on the album. Don't waste your time...

2.5 out 5

This will be 1st Cole album im not copping

My girl is a bigger Cole fan than me and even she summed it up as "Boring & Corny"

Every mixtape and album is based off of the stage of life he and his peers are experiencing. Cole is creating a catolgue of music that can be listened from beginning to end like one long story of a persons life. FNL was college years...FHD was young adult years....4YEO is adulthood...etc etc So if you're not experiencing those particular situations in your life then of course you not gonna get it.

For me, this album is not where I am at the moment but i know I'm going to be there soon so I appreciate some music that I will be able to relate too. The album is beautiful and hopefully one day y'all understand why.

Let's discuss then. What you think?

Im a husband, father of 2, fold my girls clothes, & very close in age to Cole.

I "got" what he was saying but it doesnt make the album better imo.

Im just not big on concept albums i guess.

You trying to make sense of it and throw it in a box

FHD for one is not a album for a specific time(young adult years)...it's a journey imo from childhood to self realization and appreciation

Even 4yeo which im purposefully avoiding reviewing is not tailored to a specific time. Songs like Shes mine pt2 and folding clothes are on some adult shit but they just help tell the story more than they represent the theme of the album

I need a lot more listens but I almost feel like he's paralleling his path with his homies(will get into this more once I get in more listens)

So the album isn't dope cuz he didn't take the approach y'all thought he was?

In a way bro, yeah. "Everybody gotta die" and "False prophets" were blessings and a curse because when those two singles dropped last weekend, it gave off the impression that that would be the tone of the album. Them Immortal came on and it was like oh shit, this album gone be that deal, but then it went in another direction. Now I'm a Cole fan and I'm objective enough to judge things accordingly. In no means am I saying the albums trash, its a good album, but I just was expecting more from Cole and a different tone to the album after what he dropped last week. Then he pulled the Fake Louie and didn't even include the songs on the album. Crazy.

It's not trash, but it's a very meh album to me. Honestly, it's kind of boring.

Probably won't play this in entirety ever again

I like J Cole but I've always been lukewarm when it comes to his albums. It's a ok album from first listen. Nothin that made me jump up and say "lemme run this back". I can see how people feel disappointed, but I didn't have high expectations.

I know I shitted on this album on first listen, but after grasping it in it's entirety it's a beautiful piece of work. He coulda outsourced some of the singing because some was atrocious, whereas other parts were pretty good. Not finna rush and call this a classic, but I fuck with it.

And I officially love Foldin Clothes at this point. Yall misconstruing that song for real.
