J Cole will never be considered a great, because he embodies the stereotypical "great rapper

Doesn't hip hop have enough cartoon characters already? So being normal is a liability now? This is part of why the game is on blocks right now.

EDIT: This reads like a Complex article.

It's interesting' well thought out article. I liked it, only thing is, not every artist has to be fucking weird and crazy.

He's a normal dude, level headed and humble I agree, he doesn't talk his mouth off and say weird things on interviews.

So sorry he's not acting like a moron for the media and fans sake so everyone can point finger at him and make fun of him for being a douchebag like kanye but now he's just so uninteresting and not enigmatic enough for your entertainment.

Only thing I can say about him is that his beats need to pop more and be more aggressive, I get the whole, I wanna produce the whole album by myself thing for cohesiveness but for his third album, he should try some hard thumping beats, not sure if it will suit him but give it a shot. Get dre, timbo, pharrell, or

You got em, kendrick, and kanye being them, that's great, cole is cole, leave it be. It's like picking on the dude for being himself, not putting on a cartoonized, caricature version of a rapper.

if that's him though what can you do?

I read some article that compared him to Tim Duncan.

I'm not saying I agree but for the most part they were saying that neither are flamboyant but both are really good at what they do.

here's an excerpt of the article

He may not be as animated as Chance, as daring as Kanye or as cocky as Jay Z, but it is the words that he puts to paper and releases into a microphone that are an important entry into the culture. He doesn’t possess a remarkable quality that separates him from his peers. But it is his focus on being fundamentally sound that has allowed him to become a star without going out of his way to be one. Perhaps he’s the Tim Duncan of rap?

You consider Work out Plan and Slow Jams cocky? That's why I said 'relatively'. Everyone in hip hop gets cocky on tracks from time to time; even Cole. Doesn't make them or their songs cocky. Work out plan and Slow Jams were more funny than anything.

And "Brand New" which was a Rhymefest track came out after Late Registration; different era. That's when Ye really started ramping up his high fashion schtick. That was closer to Graduation Kanye at that point.

Ye was never humble lol.

This just from Freshman Adjustment tapes.

Wack Niggaz 1 & 2

Better Than Yours

Wow

"I got 11 plaques on my walls right now, you got your first gold single, damn nigga wowww"

"Now take that equipment back to the sto', we don't wanna hear that weak shit no moooreee"

"He got a little bitty deal, now he feeling himself, yup!"

"You niggas can't be serious, you the only nigga I know to experience Y2k, you the only nigga who lights went out, you fuckin loser"

I even recall I think NO ID saying Ye jumped on the table at some label meeting back then screaming "I'm the next Michael Jackson".

Ye always been brash and arrogant. Big reason why dude is who he is.

In regards to Cole I think it has nothing to do with his personality. He just hasn't delivered the album his skillset is capable of yet. Why idk, but I don't believe it's his personality.

The Op to me says a lot about the state of the game imo. It's basically criticizing Cole for not having a gimmick, but if he was trynna be somebody that he wasn't, he would be called out for havin a gimmick. It seems he'll never please anybody.

Sounds like another instance where "rap fans" really don't know what they want

You got to be a coon that gets into a lot of drama and make mind-numbing songs that appeals to the "streets" to be exciting these days. J. Cole is the polar opposite of that and he engages none of the fuckery (outside of beating up Puff lol).

exactly

All dude was trying to say is that J.Cole is too much of a traditionalist. In a game where alot of the new critically acclaimed mcs have completely different deliveries (Kendrick, Chance the Rapper, Krit, Tyler the Creator) and different nuisances in their flow, J.Cole has the traditional east coast flow.

All that other bullshit about his content and how he isare boring is bullshit excuse to hate. I think J.Cole is really good with his topics and is exceptional when he is on it .Friday Night Lights still amazing piece of work and nothing about that body of work was boring. Its all because he is a traditionalist, and his first 2 albums hasn't lived up to expectations.
