AFTER EARTH Flops With $9.8 Million Friday Opening

Panned by harsh review by critics, it should probably come as no surprise to learn that After Earth opened with only $9.8 million yesterday with a predicted weekend total of a measly $25 million. This makes it 2013′s most high-profile flop so far.

This weekend will once again belong to Fast & Furious 6, but M. Night Shyamalan’s After Earth looks unlikely to even take the #2 spot after a disappointing Friday opening of $9.8 million. Now You See Me (which has a cast featuring the likes of Mark Ruffalo, Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman) took #2 with $10 million and looks set for a weekend of $27.8M. After Earth on the other hand – which has a ‘B’ CinemaScore despite being torn to pieces by the majority of critics – looks set for a three day total of only $27.2 million (although some analysts are predicting a number as low as $25 million).

It’s not exactly clear what has caused the movie to underperform, especially with Will Smith and his son Jaden in the two leading roles, although it’s thought that the last few Shyamalan films have just put audiences off going anywhere near anything that has his name attached. With a $130 million budget, only its overseas opening can save it now. According to Deadline, “the studio worked “really hard” to fix this crapfest in post-production and that even an arrogant know-it-all like Shyamalan was aware the pic didn’t work but couldn’t fix it on his own.”

I do think the whole nepotism arguement has more to do with the fact that Jaden has yet to do a project that his father has not either produced and/or co-starred in then racism. Other actor families mentioned in the thread at least appear to have gained stardom on their own merits instead of a famous family member constantly financing their career.

I think this battle is just as important as any other. We don't control a single major media source, we are not at all in control of what our people are exposed to. Whether or not the backlash against this particular film is racist or not, the topic does bring with it an important discussion on the issue of the lack of strong black male figures in film/entertainment. The kids watching have nothing to aspire to but rapper/athlete/drug dealer, I know it's cliche to say that but it's true

The fact is Will Smith is a popular figure in most white house holds wether its white peoples kids still watching Fresh Prince to this day or them and their parents watching his movies together not just watching but actually paying for the product

But to.me what helped was Will and his son have good onscreen Chemistry.

When his son.gets.older I can see them in a role where they betray each.other over a woman on some tyler perry shit ya dig whatever

I liked their acting I dont feel Will carried his son, son on point with the acting skills.

Movie coulda use 3 to 4 more in depth fight scenes woulda got more love
