I was living in New York when the I Am bootleg dropped. We used to bump We Will Survive and then rewind it and bump it again. It was the spring of 1999. Ja Rule, Jay Z and DMX might have had Hot 97 on lock, but Nas was destroying the mixtape game. He had the I Am bootleg, the I Am album, the Death of Escobar mixtape and then Nastradamus. People who were really into rap and not just top 40 rap all agreed that Nas was the illest MC out at that time (1999).
There's no way you could listen to the Death of Escobar mixtape (which was basically Lost Tapes) and say that Jay Z, Ja Rule or DMX were better MCs. They may have had more hits on the radio but as far as MC skills, Nas was head and shoulders above his competition. Jay Z should have had his head examined for stepping to Nas.
