OK I can get with this. If Hov can bring artist development for rappers back to the majors? he shall become even more legendary than he already is.

I have never heard anyone bump a J Cole Song

Why don't you leave the music discussion for black folks and the ones who influence this music shit, before i rub that red dot off your forehead.

I don't know any 'black' folk who even listen to or care to listen to J Cole lol

J Cole has a similar fan base to Asher Roth lol

J Cole = another Asher Roth

It's not the end all be all dude, the labels make money off touring too and other ventures. For god sakes, within the last two years, there has been less than 5 platinum rappers, that alone should let you know these labels have shifted the business model from album sales to other things.

if you don't come out with a hit single they will shelve you . It's too competitive today not to have that a good single because musicial taste switch too fast and you can easily become yesterday's news. J.Cole doesn't have a fanbase or a hit record and if he doesn't get one or the either he's done. He's been signed for like a year or two. most of the people mentioned either had a fanbase or a single before they signed a major deal. So J.Cole is bout to be S.O.L even Jay Electronica had a big record before he had a deal you have to show your worth in the industry before the label will back you . He only getting shows because he is signed.

I think it's a combo of both, fanbase and hit single, it's a timing thing. Fanbase is more important, because this dude is touring and selling out decent size events for a nigga with one official single, it's a matter of releasing that single he has with Trey Songz now and grabbing that mainstream audience. This whole idea that a big single is the end all be all is fucking false, look at niggas like Gucci, Wacka, etc all over the radio and bricking when their albums get released and look at niggas like Kid Cudi with no video and no massive singles putting up numbers.

Fanbase > Chart position imo

I agree to that. I see your point in that Waka and Gucci got a lot of popularity but nobody bought there albums. still. so I can see how letting him tour and hit up venues is a good thing. It's just at some point you have to put a bigger push behind him and give the guy a release date and single. What I wonder is who is on his team as far as the execs in control of marketing and budgeting. Like what type of staff Jay has at roc Nation. they seem to be great at managing artists but have yet to really release and push a major artist. it's more about the folks behind the scenes than folks wanting it to be about Jay not pushing the guy or making songs with him.

Yeah your right dude, he has no fanbase. Just because radio and tv doesn't tell you someone is hot doesn't mean they are, there are plenty of niggas on the radio who don't or can't sell out events and tour, fanbase > the perception of being a big time artist.

J Cole doesn't have a fanbase! smh

Nipsey Hussle was selling out over seas too nigga and your point. J.Cole wasn't signed he wouldn't have shows or none of

that because he don't have no outstanding shit as his foundation , he okay he hasn't shown that he is something special , that's why he doesn't have a release date. When He had an interviews last year he was talking about his album was coming out in Dec. 2010 his shit never came out. He don't even believe he is going to sell so what does that tell you

Ehhh I'm not sure if he's losing steam cause I don't think he had a lot to begin with. I do think him/they are still searching for a hit record which is gonna be huge on the success he has or not. Either way tho ill be checking for him.
