I first heard about Drake in this forum. Before he dropped an album. Before signing with YM. People was saying he was the second coming. It was him, Coles and Kendrick. And yes if you think about it he became an international star. First Canadian rapper to be on top of the mainstream. He became YM marquee player even overshadowing Wayne. He beat Meek senseless, and dropped hit after hit. But after 4 albums 2 official mixtape and a Playlist , do you see Drake as the ultimate king of hip hop or a cancer to it. For all his wins he been proven to not only bite styles, and use ghostwriter to write. And alot of people don't even seem to care. Jay-Z may have been superficial, but he had solid albums and was a top mc who spoke his own lyrics. Can a rapper who sing half the time who bites and use ghostwriter be the King of hip hop? Is he top 3? Or is he more of a pop artist. He definitely changing how we look and experience hip hop. He got us calling his album a Playlist for petesake. Now he is opening up the UK rap scene who was on the coming up anyway. Is he a genius or a fruad? How do you feel about him?

@ the bolded. You just answered your own question.

I bought Drake's Take Care album and couldn't make it all the way through. Too much singing.

Back to Back was cool but personally I don't see what the big deal is.

I bought Kendrick's GKMC album around the same time I bought Take Care. I prefer Kendrick's album by a landslide.

When Jay Z was on top there was no denying that he had skills. Jay was one of the best MCs of his era, if not the best. But with Drake, there's better MCs that make better music, they just don't have the machine behind them.

You guys do know there are others rappers besides Drake?

Yes there is, and I'm not a fan, but he is one of the biggest in this era. I never really got into his work, besides what I heard on the radio and videos and features, which still is a lot. I don't think I ever talked about him on here. He definitely has a hugh influence on the culture. Most people tell you Coles is among the best and Kanye is becoming to erratic. Troy ave a cocky clown nobody really likes and Future the king of trap/ lean music. But I hear a lot of mix views on Drake. And since this is a hip hop sight, is a wrong for me to ask what is his position in the grand scheme of this genre.

Also this is probably the first time a top tier rapper rose to the top without claiming to be a thug, hustler ,pimp or gangster or conscience or weed rapper. And he did it while singing whole songs. And if he's one of the strong lyrical rappers (not taking in consideration that he might not write). What does that say about whats "hot and trending" out here if he is among the top 10, 30 years old and under? Does the hip hop community wants a lyrical gate keeper, a spokesman for the genre that it doesn't matter if he breaks fundamental Hip Hop laws. Or is he that good? And he just taking us into a new direction?

This is a lot of bullshit right gtfoh he was never "strong lyrically" foh and Drake dangled his leg out in all those rapper archetypes you want to give him a cookie for your made up rapper archetypes now wtf kind of shit is this

You talking about what's wrong with breaking fundemental hip-hop laws what's the argument in that when he's making clear cut pop music

1. I never said it was ok for him to break fundamental hip hop laws. I asked does it matter? Some people feel it doesn't. I feel it does. But I haven't given my opinion on him yet. I want to as objective as possible until a feel people give their opinions. 2. Whether he writes or not, some of the lyrics are strong. I noted he was a known biter. But if he did write at some point, what he wrote was dope. He was an underground artist from a place where rappers were not mainstream. And he got a lot of love on this sight too in the beginning . To his credit rappers from Canada like Kos who rap ,sing and chant and other rappers like Chocolair and Socrates never quite got the whole bodies in the door way of mainstream hip hop. Now other rappers/singers like Tory Lane are getting some shine.( he bites a lot too).

And when I say new school. 2010 up to now. Drake Kendrick and Cole, ushered in and made some of the most important or biggest raps in this decade.

Meeks Twitter fingers Quentin Miller ether killed drakes hip hop credibility b2b didn't erase/delete them Quentin Miller reference trax.......& Seeing that Drake left qm off the rico writer credits now we got too question how many trax has Drake not credited his ghostwriter on his verses & songs after Twitter fingers...

Drake is just Drake. I personally like most of the singing he does. I would prefer him to rap more though. He came up the right way and plus he signed with Wayne who was the hottest rapper on the planet at the time. I actually thought he was gonna sign with Trey back in early 07 but who wouldn't wanna work with The Carter 2 Lil Wayne.

Or did J Prince tell Drake who he was gonna sign/work with? Idk

False prophet

I never understood what all the hype was for - even when he dropped his mixtape. His music never grew on me and I'm not a bandwagon dude.

Not to get off topic ... but I would say Kendrick is the chosen one when it comes to overall Hip-Hop and music with substance. No bandwagon - I was probably the first dude in KCMO playing his music before he blew up and years later I had a lot of "Told you so" moments.
