So let me get this straight it's 9/6/2011 and people think for any reason that $200,000 is not a lot of money. I'm married and we have a 1 yo son. I work two jobs and my girl works one. I'll be heading to Parris Island in Feb to start boot camp. We stay in an apartment and we make all our bills on time. As far as debt goes I could pay it all off before 2013. Two cars paid for a 2000, and a 2001. $200,000 would set us up for life. The reason why is because we understand our way of living and we know what we need and want. I wouldn't see $200,000 forcing us to have a drastic change in our way of living but I do see it making almost everything a lot easier for us. Some of you who think that $200,000 is not a lot of money just because you have kids or responsibilities, or you want to but a new house make me scratch my head. Really? can you seriously blow $200,000 in 1 year.Wow.

It's real easy for someone to blow 200k that hasn't that type of money before, or don't know how to manage it. How you think a man that signs a 50 million dollar contract end up with nothing, and sells his super bowl ring to make ends meet? Hell, it takes more that 250k just to raise 1 child, and that's being frugal.

Seriously, 200k will get you started if you make the right choices, and have some type of business savvy. But, just like common sense, every body don't have that.

Only thing I can say is, everyone's money spends differently...200k to you and a few other guys I know, will have their living room looking nice. Just the living room LOL!!

So, I can't knock you for how your money spends.

Depends on your spending habits.

If you're fairly modest and only get what you need then Yes it's a bit of money.

If you're flashy and have expensive taste, then no. $200,000 probably won't last you.

As I stated earlier...it takes 250K to raise 1 child, and that's being on the frugal side of things...so in reality, 200K really isn't enough to sustain a family of 4 over a lifetime. Now, I can see if investments were made, property was bought, and that money was flipped to benefit over a long duration...but to just come into 200k, and be like "Thank Gawd!! I can quit working!!" Nah, that's not gonna fly. I think what happened here is, your words were misunderstood.

On another note....one guy friend spent 15k on one piece of furniture...that dude had me singing the blues, and re-evaluating my choices in life.
