How not to lose your lunch on a bumpy flight
http://nypost.com/2016/05/17/how-not-to-lose-your-lunch-on-a-bumpy-flight/

May has been a big month for turbulence.

This month alone, eight passengers were sent to the hospital following an extremely bumpy San Juan-Orlando JetBlue flight; then a few days later, 31 passengers were hurt and 10 hospitalized after turbulence rocked an Abu Dhabi-Jakarta Etihad Airways jet.

For jumpy air travelers, this is disheartening news. But there are ways to keep calm even when the air outside isn’t.

Here, Dr. Robert Sharman, project scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colo., and Peter Murray, creator of TurbulenceForecast.com, explain how to reduce — or even avoid altogether — the chances of being bumped around in-flight.

Don’t sit toward the rear of the aircraft. Instead, opt for seats over the wings, which help a plane fly smoothly. “Turbulence near the back of the airplane is exaggerated since it is furthest from the airplane’s center of gravity,” Sharman explains.

Fly during the morning, when the chance of turbulence is least. “The sun has not had a time to whip up the weather yet, and storms are calmer and less developed,” says Murray. “There’s less heat, which means less heat-related bumps.”

Avoid flight paths over the Rockies. “Statistically, higher frequencies of turbulence occur over the Rocky Mountains, due to convective clouds in the spring and summer, and mountain waves in the winter,” says Sharman.

Fly during early to mid-spring and early to mid-fall for less turbulent flights. “You avoid most of the weather-related turbulence associated with strong summer storms by avoiding the middle of summer, and you avoid the strong jet stream over the US by avoiding winter flying,” says Murray.

Put your mind at ease, and take a cue from the flight attendants. “During turbulence, notice how the flight attendants are relaxed and just doing their job, like it’s no big deal,” Murray says. “If they aren’t worried, then you shouldn’t be worried.”

Heed this frequent flyer foot tip. “Some people report that slightly raising your feet off the floor helps turbulence feel less intense,” says Murray.

Pay attention to your cup of coffee. “To see how mild turbulence really is, try watching liquid in your coffee cup during bumps,” advises Murray. “You’ll find that it just gently swishes around, if anything. It just feels worse than it actually is.”

Ask questions: More knowledge means less fear. “Once you are on board, make it a point to ask to talk about the flight to the captain, since there’s a good chance they have already flown that route that day and know what to expect,” says Murray. “They have likely also been briefed by the airline’s meteorology department.”

Obey the safety video: Stay strapped in. “The current state of turbulence forecasting is still immature, and unexpected encounters can happen,” says Sharman. “So it’s best to always keep that seat belt buckled.”

this is good...but is off more times than its on.

i fly so much i know when it will start, when the landing will be bumpy, why planes sometiems circle around clouds or tilt the plane to reduce landing turbulence....

all kinda shit you learn being in the air 100k plus miles every year

Nah, it's true. Happened last time I flew by myself. And the same airline.

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Passengers on a Southwest Airlines flight headed to Philadelphia had a scare after the jet hit rough turbulence on Tuesday.

Action News spoke to airport officials and passengers on Southwest Airlines Flight 4817 from Nashville.

They told us people on the plane were bounced around a bit after the aircraft hit the turbulence.

"It was like a roller coaster ride," said Mark DaSilva of Dallas, Texas. "I was sleeping and all of a sudden a guy to my left yelled really loud," DaSilva said. "People came off their seats."

The pilot alerted the ground that they might be injuries on board.

However, while there were some minor injuries reported, no one was seriously hurt.

Passengers we spoke with say what made it so frightening was that it all occurred very suddenly - and without warning of impending turbulence.

"There was a sudden lurch where a lot of people were flung up and out of their seat temporarily. There were a few people out of their seats, a stewardess threw a bag of garbage accidentally," said Michael Conrad of Nashville, Tennessee.

"It looked quite disastrous from the back of the plane where we were but, overall, I don't think it was that bad, but it felt pretty legitimately scary during the turbulence," Conrad said.

This comes amid numerous flight delays at the airport due to the snow.

Even made it to abc news. The old folks hit me up after they happened to catch the news on tv: PLANE HITS ROUGH TURBULENCE ON WAY TO PHILADELPHIA INT'L AIRPORT/

While it was happening, this old white lady next to me, turned and looked at me with the craziest/scared look on her face. I tried so hard not to bust out laughing and looking all crazy.

I was supposed to be scared I guess, but I wasn't. I don't like flying, but if the plane was going down, then the plane was going down, and I damn sure wasn't going out baby crying and shit.

I must've missed the news reporters though, cuz I didn't see any of them when we got off the plane. I probably didn't get the worst of it though since I was sitting in the front/middle with my seatbelt on. I heard other people behind me getting tossed around though.

man i think the scariest plane ride i was on was leaving outta philly going to puerto rico during a storm.

the pilot took off like dude in the movie flight...on like a 45 degree angle straight up.....shit was dropping and bouncing and i couldnt look scared cause my son was with me...so i pretended i was sleeping thru it while i prayed for us both to be safe. shit lasted like 15minutes.

I be so drunk, I never even notice turbulence.

this is me..

i fuckin hate flying.. but i hate driving outside of an 8hr radius even more..

so the night before i don't sleep and the morning of i get fucked up.. and get inside the airport and order one more drink before boarding..

I just had a 12 hour flight amsterdam to singapore....as soon as we were near sumatra n malaysia shit got real lol smh. Climate is ruthless around these parts, never had a smooth flight, wether its 2 hours from singapore to surabaya or to KL....

Planes go down here all the time, the big airlines, sans singapore airlines, dont even fly to a lot of places in indo. Emirates, KLM or Qatar airways will take you to Jakarta but than have a local corp fly you to your final destination lol

If you fly from amsterdam to jakarta youll bound to have 3 to 4 hours of turbulence straight

Ive prayed to all the gods a million times lol

Damn indo ocean flights fam...if you fly from jakarta to doha or dubai, youll through sri lanka n a lil bit of india but the rest is all ocean. Regarding all the turbulence and missing planes n helicopters in indo, my theory is its because of mother nature, all the damn vulcano activity n shit. There are several large active vulcanos within a 30 km radius from the city I reside in now.
