I'm tired of the old Legendary rappers gettin way more credit than they deserve...!

Quick question, because the legends that the T/S named helped pave the way for rappers today, means that they can't be surpassed skill wise? If I can compare rap to sports, Bob Cousy is a legend and helped build the Celtics, but I'd take Paul Pierce over him any day of the week.

again. not a competitive sport. basketball is not hip hop. yeah i agree the delivery has gotten a lot tighter, but its also become a format that a lot of dudes latch onto. its about who can sound like the next man, but better.

WELL DON'T KILL YOURSELF BUT I AGREE THAT ALOT OF THE ELDER STATESMAN IN THE GAME WERE WAY OVERRATED. IN MY OPINION JAY Z IS THE GOAT.

But of course if the 80's were the time when u had the girl the car (hair) then you probably were bagging some shit that while is the shit to you, a 20 yo today would look at you like wtf is this. the proof is in the sales would u put any of your own money down to print albums with any of them old heads and expect return.

Y'all niggas confusing the artistry with the industry. The only reason why guys like Jay-Z, Kanye, Wayne, etc are famous is because the music industry overtook rap artistry. The music industry is pushing these mainstream cats because thats how they make money. You see these mainstream cats on MTV, Radio, Facebook etc because thats what the industry wants you to see. They know these cats appeal to the masses and they know young people and white people will eat that shit up if they put these niggas in heavy rotation. They dont care who the person is or what they're spittin. All they care about is the money in the bank.

Whats funny is that all these cats like Jay-z, Kanye, Wayne, Em, Etc were around in the 90s with the real cats like Biggie, G Rap, Kane, etc and they didnt have shit to say. For all you guys saying that the oldheads arent that good need to realize that not only would there be no Jay-z without Kane and Biggie but I would take it a step further by saying Jay-z would still be a sidekick if Biggie was still alive. You young cats think of Jay-Z as the GOAT because you dont know how he couldnt hang with Kane or Biggie when he was running with them. The only reason why Jay-Z and these new cats are rich and famous was because they got the industry push that older artists couldnt and wouldnt get. These music industry cats were trying to buy low and sell high. It was too much money to get top acts in the 90s and sell them to the masses but it was easy to get new up and comers who could appeal to people outside the normal rap audience. Yall new niggas dont realize how programmed yall are. Y'all musical taste was created in a manhattan corparate boardroom and yall too young and stupid to realize that.

Niggas acting like the classics from the day still can't bang in a club. Btw how the fuck is a 40 year old not from the old school when dudes was rocking rope chains an Hawaiian shirts in the 80's and rapping at backyard bb-qs. You might as well say, dudes that are still around today from that day outlasted their peers. This does not say that new people are gonna be around as long. You can continue to make lots of noise within this new internet era of you keep up a high profile of doing dumb shit. It takes a special type of artist to stick around for 10 years and special circumstances. Run-DMC and LL got props cuz they were selling out stadiums and making movies with the Death Jam machine in the earliest stages of the genre. They were making dope tracks that are still listenable.

Everything then wasn't dope just like now. Big took the summer cuz he had classic bangers. I like technical skills with rappers but that's not how rap started and that doesn't completely define rap music (or hip hop, which encompasses more then rap). I rather hear a good story then a punchline. Great writers in other genres are praised for their ability to invoke a story while pushing the barrier of musical artistry. If you just want to be a rapping ass rapper and you don't want to pursue a practice of making a dope beat and laying down slick, occasionally witty yet relevant lines, then you should just stick to rapping in your basement studio. The similar quality between old and new is that they made classic tracks that most people at the time enjoyed. There are the occasional few artist that can remain relevant in multiple eras and i definitely give props to those who can survive with the erratic fast food state of today's audience. That doesn't take away from those who had a descent run.

Shut your underground self up!!!!!!!!!!!

Underground? I mess with ALL music. Just because I don't like Jay and Em doesn't make me underground. I'm one of those dudes who NEVER fucked with Jay's music besides a handful of songs. I always thought he was overrated and forced upon the public. Pretty much the same way a lot y'all feel about Wayne. Nowhere near the most talented, but good enough to market to the fair weather fans as one of the best.

The same thing with Em, except he has even less talent than Jay. Luckily, his skin color more than makes up for that shortcoming.

...
Currently, Kanye, Wayne, Lupe, Rick Ross, Ludacris > JayZ, Em.

Being an OG doesn't make you still a good MC, but people coming at this with that "X sold Y milli units in week one" nonsense don't know anything about the music industry. It's all about getting that major label promotion and those crossover hits. Wayne gonna be eating off "How to Love" forever, doesn't make it good music.

Hip hop went from a movement to an art form in the late 90s when major labels starting buying out the indie labels and making them subsidiaries, the artists that could make that transition are the ones that are making platinum off mediocre albums. The game has changed completely, but that doesn't make the old shit bad. Nobody talking smack about the Mona Lisa because Leonardo didn't have a camera. Hip hop has gone from cutting up vinyl or tapes or whatever of orchestras to make a beat, to Kanye hiring a 40 piece string section for a 10 second part of a song.

But to T/S I gotta say clearly you never listened to Pun or Biggie or Big L or like half the people you called out there. There's a reason Wayne is still quoting L lines and Jay Z jocked Big for years. Nobody tells a better story than Biggie.

At the end of the day though, you got two kinds of rappers: you got the poet, and you got the hustler. The poet never falls off, he's forever looking at shit through a different lens tryn to get a new angle on it, and the hustler is trying to keep his name up. Some of the dudes on top of the sales game right now are poets but most are just hustlers. Nothing new about that.

here is a story lifted of off the front page some time ago.
[laughing]

KRS-One: I remember the BET Hip Hop Awards, when I was there to get my Lifetime Achievement Award. Right in the wings, Wayne was like, “Yo. The Teacha.” And I’m like, “Yo, don’t even start.” So I give him a pound, and I say, “Let me tell you something. You are the number one MC today.” He said, “Yo, don’t f**k with me, Kris. Don’t say that s**t, man. Don’t f**k with me.” Coming from you? Don’t f**k with me.” Everybody was staring around – like a hundred people. And he’s like, “Don’t f**k with me, man.” I told him: “Stay focused. Don’t get distracted. Don’t get with that bulls**t. You are the number one MC. Stay focused. Take hip hop with you.” Everybody clapped. The s**t was ridiculous. He broke down into tears. It was ridiculous.

Somebody got it on film, somewhere. Cameras were all over the place. I was just telling him, “You the number one. You the number one.” But the point is: he took that s**t seriously. And I said it seriously and he took it like, “Wow. KRS-One validated my whole s**t right now. Oh, s**t.” And he was waiting for that. He was looking for that. He could always pop that yang, he could always say, “Yeah, I’m the best, and I’m selling . . .” But there’s a part in his soul that wants Africa Bambaataa to come by and shake his hand. There’s a part of his soul that wants to be accepted by Chuck D or have a KRS come over. All them dudes from 50 on down — everybody — and I’m saying it because I’m living it — this ain’t gossip. I’m living these things. These dudes are coming to me with real questions about their lives: this, that and the other. I probably need a reality show. I need to stop bulls**tting and go get a reality show so that people can really see.

This speaks to the level of respect that the generations need to have amongst each other.
we could really be building on the reason. But too many of our posters fall into categories that are un-becoming of a true hip hop fan.

Dead, after I seen that Biggie was overated, GTFOH 90% of what your Waynes, T.I.'s and even Jay spit don't amount up to the Biggies lyrics and those were 90's lyrics I love the Dough(where he murded Jay), Story to Tell(which still know rapper today has yet to do) and Downfall alone lyrically is better then any Lil wayne song or T.I. song, Life or Death cd can be played song for song without skipping any tracks what wayne album has unskippable tracks, when any of those rappers show the ability to tell a story like B.I.G. did (Story To Tell, Somebody Gotta Die, Niggaz Bleed) or make a song like (10 crack commandments) and it makes sense, or do a song (rewind) like Nas then we can have a discussion about the past and the present artist, untill then Holla, Boi!!!!

SMH at this thread.

If you dont know where you came from, you wont know where you are going. The legends are worthy of the respect they get because they paved the way for the rappers of today to do what they do. Of course there are plenty of rappers who are "better" then artist past but these artist look up to these legends and started rapping in the first place because of these legends. So they shall always be remembered and respected for the doors they opened.
