Cosign some of what you're saying, but you took it too far naming TI, Kanye, Em, and Wayne. Those 4 rappers are nowhere near the GOAT list. They don't have the catalog, the skills, and the longevity. Also, BDK, Rakim, and Kool Mo Dee are incredibly dope. Especially BDK.

... I do agree on some level that a lot of these older (and dead) rappers get put on a pedestal. I agree Big Pun is hella wack, Biggie is overrated, KRS-One is average, DMC is average etc.

Cosizzle. People on here acting like KRS-One is on the same level as a Nas. SMH.

I would give LL the GOAT title before Rakim and well before I even think of Kool G Rap.

I have debates about this subject all the time, the opinion is half ass tho. from raps begening before it was part of the music there have been wack, average, and above average rappers. run was "better" than DMC but can you dig him without DMC? pun was above average, but not better than BIG. anyways them niggas was the first ones..kanye, jay, nas, and wayne didnt come out the beast they are today. why should they get more credit in the lyrical catagory? they made rap what it is today, but only after the ol heads raised the bar to a certin level.

the problem is these newer rappers are forced to follow a protical to sell (make a song for the girls or the ignoraant act like u sell made drugs and blah blah blah)

vs back in the 90;s u sold records b/c u was actually had something to say, they had talent, not a look or act.

Im convinced ur taste in hiphop is all over the place

My taste in Hip-Hop is just that, MY opinion. Everything I say is obviously subjective to what my criteria is for being a good emcee.

.. I'm not the type of dude to have a generic ass opinion, just because the masses say you should. I don't give a fuck if the majority says rapper A is good, because imo he's wack as fuck, and he'll be addressed as such whenever I talk about him.

It doesn't matter whose the first to do it, it matters how good you were in relation to the competition. "The game stays the same, the name's change etc." People aren't entitled GOAT spots because they paved the way, they're simply give the title of a pioneer. The truth is, the rappers in the Nas (90's) era pretty much surpassed 90+% of the older rappers, but on the other side of things they were some extremely talented older rappers.

BDK,LL, Rakim, Kool MD, Cube, Kool G etc. can rap with ANYONE.

what has wayne or ti done that has revolutionized hip hop.....them niggas just got hot 5 yrs ago and then didn't build much on that...partly due to the legal system but let's be real wayne or ti haven't changed hip hop......what classics have they dropped?.......your argument works for a jay, nas, em......maybe a kanye after one more great album

Its fucking ridiculous how much more love rappers like Rakim, Kool Mo Dee, KRs1, BDK, Big Pun (wack!), Biggie (overrated)!, RUN DMC (....wiggedy wack), even Sugar Hill Gang & niggas like that who really weren't even that nice get mad props for GOAT status... over Jay-Z, Nas, Eminem, Kanye, even a T.I. or Wayne who have dominated this era of true competition and revolutionized Rap music as much if not more than any of them niggas... I don't want to hurt any of yall old heads but its truth almost all them niggas couldn't hang in today's rap or have even made as much quality music as a Jay or Kanye.. But its like hip hop fans never wanna give just due to our rappers which is just unfair...

Half them old niggas (or Dead niggas) are still tryna rap and aint been looked out for about 15 years... but people have the nerve to say Jay-Z or Em has to do more to pass them niggas when if you compare lyric wise and what not are killing off them old heads... I'm sure yall understand where I'm getting at... Its cool if you a legend and u were here first but that shyt don't mean players who have shown and proved consistently haven't passed up them niggas... The old and the dead are getting way too much credit now and it needs to end!

Show me a link where ANYONE said Sugar Hill Gang was GOAT status.

And Rakim>>> Wayne, T.I and I'm 24 years old.

You have to listen to Rakim, Kane and Kool G with the thought process that, nobody was rapping like these guys until they came up. Was basically basic shit before them.

guess they dont know that the likes of em, jay, nas, styles p and a host of others borrowed from the likes of g rap, kane, rakim, masta ace,.....only in hip hop do those that paved the way get shunned......I'll be the first to admit that nas, jay and a few others have passed some of these cats but to dismiss the pioneers is just ridiculous

yeah alot of those old school rappers have been surpassed but it doesn't mean we have to discredit their contributions in hip hop

Co-Sign......those cats can rap with anyone....the problem that older emcees have is they need to update their flow and their taste in the beats the rap on.....ll did a good job with that in the past.....rakim as well.... nas flow is always nice but his beat selection has been suspect....wayne and ti do have the oppurtunity to surpass them if they stay hungry and get focused on making music that is worth listening to ten yrs from now......like blueprint, ready to die, me against the world, and stillmatic

Big pun is Wack now?

A lot of it has to do with the fact that he completely stole Kool G's style. Listen to a Kool G track, then listen to Big Pun. The same exact everything except Kool G is way iller. That and he's just wack. Wack punches, wack vocab etc.

The same thing with Eminem. He COMPLETELY STOLE Master's Ace style. You're automatically wack when you do that disrespectful shit. At least JayZ switched it up a little bit. These dudes just jacked another dude's style completely.

If this don't sound like Em to you, then you need to get your ears check.

I have respect for the legends, but I don't care about the Biggie and Puns. Bigs wordplay was nice, but he sounds like a mix between a fat chicken and someone with food in their mouth no disrespect. Too many rappers surpassed Biggie, we all know to be calling him King of NY is ridiculous its more of a respect thing.

so with that being said who in the short list of pioneers has lil wayne lyricly surpassed? except to re work punchlines...he got em there.

the time has changed, the GAME continues to change, but if a nigga still livin...the faces are the same.

consider how old rap is and how many niggas have put they voice to a track and tell me the ol heads because they aint popin now dont deserve the credit they get for being greats...

fuck them old nigga's. all yall nigga's hootin and hollering about "if it wasn't for ______ there wouldn't be _______" get the fuck outta here.

Them dust balls made hip hop a hot sound, and the newer cats made it a hot genre.

I agree, they legends, but they aint (not including some of the artist t/s stated) shit on the artist who succeeded them.

I had a long argument on youtube where a nigga swore up and down the suggar hill gang was the truth!
i think they was frauds...anyway you made my point with your final statement.
how can you take credit from a person who crafted what you are...T.I. wayne and another NOW nigga are products of the 80's rappers.

Wayne is on another planet. He's trying to become a megastar, so it's not fair to compare a guy with a marketing plan to a dead mixtape rapper. You can't do anything but applaud Wayne's hard work and dedication. Dude went from a mixtape rapper to king of hip-pop. Wayne > all mixtape rappers of principle alone.

Camron is as dope as they get. Maybe y'all/you don't get the slang he uses, but dude's wordplay is top notch. He use to shit on everyone back in the day, Big L, JayZ, even Beanie sometimes. If you don't think Cam can spit, idk what to tell you. Camron is light-years better than Pun. Even that new shit with Vado is hot, even though he ain't really spittin like he use to. He taking it easy on Vado, the same way he did with Juelz.

Right now, Wayne is trying to sell music. He's trying to become the next megastar not only in rap, but in music period. He found out what the people like, and he's feeding it to them. With that being said, it's kind of hard to compare pop-star Wayne to old school hip-hop artists just because of the style differences. All I'll say is Wayne is in that top 30 range.
