To help make my point, I'll say this...LL Cool J was as big a star as Jay-Z is now. But a youngster who wasn't there would disagree because they are only going to go by record sell and his coroporate endeavors because that's tangible to them. They wouldn't understand the climate of hip-hop back then and how rich and famous are two different things entirely. The climate of hip-hop has changed dramatically and it's become a billion dollar industry that goes way beyond record sells. kids don't understand that at that time LL was inovative for that era and had word wide fame. now it's laughable in comparison to today's standards but it's impossible for anyone who wasn't there to mentally understand the impact he had in comparison to the impact Jay has now because the numbers don't match up. there is no way we could even possibly explain it in a way that would make sense to younger fans who didn't witness it. It's like saying Barry Sanders was better than Jim Brown because he ran more yards than Jim. For the era Jim was in he was Barry Sanders. In LL's era, he was Jay-Z.

And here lies the problem. When you go off memory alone, you tend to have a fondness or bias for your era. Its clouded and in no way verifiable. Things like media impressions, record sales, etc. are tangible verifable facts that aren't diluted by personal judgments. For instance, in 1996 without looking at any data if you asked the average person who was around at that time, which single was bigger If I Ruled the World by Nas or Ain't No Nigga by Jay-Z...the first reaction is obviously for most the Nas single..but when you go back look at the data and metrics you see that Ain't No Nigga was actually the higher charting single on radio, hot 100, urban etc. The thing about your memory is its just not a reliable measure of truth or validity.

key words in the topic are your opinion on HIP HOP doesn't matter

you can comment all you want on the current rap game

you have to remember that back in the "old school" days, people actually lived the shit they rapped about.

and if they didn't they existed around it.

nowadays you hear every little nigga spittin about the ice they got, the money they floss wit, the murders they commited... all from the comfort of their homes in the suburbs

that shit is ok cuz its just entertainment but back in the days it was entertainment and relatable.

hip hop has been on the decline steadily since about 96-98

the real drop started when producers loaned sounds out across the board.

nowadays albums are formulas based on having a little bit of whatever is in style on your album.

you have to have the "radio record" the "party record" the "bitches song" and so forth.

back then you had an album and outta what you had, you had to pick a single.

how many times nowadays do you hear an album, hear the best song and never see a video or radio spin for it.

instead you get the song that is produced by whoever is the IT hottest producer on the radio

we got caught up in a little back and forth but I think you missed my original point I made in my first point in this thread. Which was the thread started sounded arrogant putting an age on who can and can't tell him anything about hip-hop. I disagree with that because I too study music before my time and can hold a good intellegent conversation with an older head about their 50's and 60's music. The thing I disagreed with you on though is that you came with a similar arrogance saying you know just as much or more than those who lived it. All I said was no that's not true. Though I feel I am very knowledgeable on my parent's music and their era, I'm not going to be so arrogant to proclaim to them that I know just as much or more than they do about it. That would be idiotic. Point is it's cool you probably know way more than other your age but don't be so narrow minded or hard headed to think someone older could possibly teach you even more.
That's what us old head have against yall youth...yall fuckin hard headed like that. Yall's beef is that us old head think we know everything. That's why I came off the top saying right away that I'm not one of those type of old heads that believe they is no value in something the younger generation has to say. I believe there is. But when you come off like you know everything already, I'm gonna respond the same way as you youngsters respond when yall encounter an old head who comes off that way. You up in here telling niggas you know more because you read/heard it. I'm up in here saying I know more because I lived it. That don't mean I discredit everything you know like you are doing to us tho. I'm here to share, not diss but it's impossible to do when dealing with arrogant hard heads that already feel they know it all. I don't club anymore but I'd be a fool to sit up here and tell those that still do what's going on in them now just because I get updates from young homies.
