One reason I value the East-Coast's contribution to HipHop more than some regions is because they were are able to incorporate knowledge and wisdom in their music to edu-tain the people instead of just entertaining the people.

East-coast artist like "The Last Poets" were spittin' so much truth to the people they got put on the Cointelpro list....
East-coast artists like Rakim took lyricism to the next level and told us the Black man was GOD..not a dog, gorilla, or a beast but a GOD...it was a new way of thinking.

Artists like Brand Nubian, Poor Righteous Teachers, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, KRS-ONE, Queen Latifah, Jean Grae, Imortal Technique, Public Enemy, A Tribe called Quest, X clan, Lauryn Hill etc... etc... always gave the listeners some culture without playing the character of the pimp-dealer-gangsta.

Every region has its share of wack artists but the regions with the most respect also have the largest ratio of positive intelligent, artists who dont promote criminality in their music.
