Because half the fools are to leaned out to spit out a full coherent sentence. It's my opinion as well that in the early years of hip hop they had something to prove, a message to convey. They wanted to present themselves and represent the culture as an intelligent form of poetry. I've always thought that the simplicity of the beats back then allowed for the MC to just lyrically kill it where as now the beat is mostly the major part of a track. Everyone traded lyrics for bass.

Listen to most of these mainstream rappers they mostly use that funny voice with that same flow and delivery. You know rappers these days like to jump on the bandwagon and ride the wave of whatever is hot.

Traded their soul for money

Bandwagon jumping on what's popular.

Harmonizing (mostly failing at it) is popular with the females.

Slurring like that makes it easier to write (mostly because you have less to pay someone to write your lyrics write).

Finally, it's because what the labels want.

Pick any one.

And for the record, the song I posted, Let The Rhythm Hit Em originally had 4 lines going at Big Daddy Kane. But Kane heard the demo tape and called up Rakim and they squashed the beef, so Rakim went back to the studio and took the 4 lines out.

There's probably some rappers somewhere who rap in a style you like. That doesnt mean enough people like it to be popular like the popular rappers. Dont worry about music you dont personally like and try not to get salty that its popular is probably the best thing to do. Also just worry about what you like listen to Rakim doesnt matter when it was made if thats what you wanna listen to. I was listening to some music from the 70s earlier cause thats what i wanted to hear. Who cares about some abstract concept of why nobody does that now instead of enjoying what you wanna listen too. All that matters is they did it whenever they did it and I have the cds now.

Mane, niggas been riding the wave and bandwagon jumping for years. It didn't just start with these new mainstream rappers.

Plus, if rappers did that rapid fire flow like Rakim, that would in turn, be bandwagon riding as well.

Because The South popularized wack, simplistic rhyming....that was the beginning of the end, and todays youth dont have a great reference to what good emcees are like we had back in the day.

Because it's a lot easier for record labels to keep churning out dumbass rappers who sign shitty deals and if they don't blow up it's on to the next one.

When mainstream rappers had to have skills they also had a value and at least a certain level of knowledge.

The bar is purposely being kept very low.

I guess my question is; how come listeners prefer sing song rap where they drag out words over straight spitting? That's what people on the IC are posting when they post links. 9 times out of 10 when somebody posts something on the IC it's some non rapping rapper.

@ Peezy Jenkins. You keep telling me to stop making threads, but you keep clicking on them. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over an over again and expecting different results. Stop clicking on my threads and telling me to "stop making threads". You're making a fool of yourself.

Also, I don't really listen to the radio but when I do I listen to WDAS, they're the bomb! They play nothing but grown man music. 70s soul, modern R&B and old school hip hop. I don't have anything negative to say about the radio stations in Philadelphia. My gripe is with the stuff that the posters on The IC post.

This is what it seems like these type of threads/topics are about. Muhfuhs mad. Cause the South is popular. This is it at the end of the day. As a South dude aint no region hatin from me shts lame and backwards. Nobody got time to live in the past.

I dont want to snap because I understand some are frustrated and I aint no region hater. But the "the South popularized..." argument has some serious flaws. Its saying the South just runs it and dictates and yall just cant do nothin cause the "Big bad South" is runnin things. Doesnt look good on your part at all. Just sayin.

Alright dude. Listen to who you think can "rap". Rakim or whoever...Ima let you do your thing I seen how you do it on the board I aint hatin. But dont think people cant easily see through it.

I think 50 Cent and Kanye West started it back around 03/04/05. Those guys clearly weren't from The South but they dragged out their words with a drawl and it sold records. Then everybody jumped on the Bandwagon. Now you got Drake who's from Toronto of all places whose supposed to be the nicest MC out and his rhymes can't hold a candlestick to what Rakim was spitting 25 years ago.

It just doesn't make any sense to me. You'd think rap would evolve, not devolve.
