Because half the fools are to leaned out to spit out a full coherent sentence. It's my opinion as well that in the early years of hip hop they had something to prove, a message to convey. They wanted to present themselves and represent the culture as an intelligent form of poetry. I've always thought that the simplicity of the beats back then allowed for the MC to just lyrically kill it where as now the beat is mostly the major part of a track. Everyone traded lyrics for bass.
