I'll co-sign the Atmosphere - My favourite album of theirs was their last effort - When Life Gives You Lemons... Paint That Shit Gold - I gave it my album of the year in 08.

As for further artists to check for:

K'Naan (Somali emcee who resides in Canada)
K-Os (Canadian Emcee)
The Foreign Exchange - Connected album
Blu
CunninLynguists - Southern group that are incredible imo.
CYNE - Introspective lyrics - start with their Evolution Fight album - I played it daily for a whole summer.
Jay Electronica (Can't wait for him to drop an album)
Knonam - he has a good album called "Length of the Blade" which has all 80's remixes, I think Traestar put me onto him.
P.O.S - His album "Never Better" from last year is amazing. I see you've checked for him but seriously, if you don't have that one, get it.
Pigeon John - His "Summertime Pool Party" album was incredible.
Binary Star - "Masters of the Universe" some say is their favourite album of all time.
Velvet Orchestra - Their album, "Velvet Ballads" is definitely a great listen with lots of great artists making appearances including Kweli.
---

I'll post some more later as the topic grows.

Foreign Exchange - Connected is probably the best Hip Hop underground album to get if you are just beginning to listen because it really is a completely separate subgenre from mainstream Hip Hop. Some of the content can be overwhelming and the artists different so I'd recommend getting into some of the more crafted stuff first.

I'd also recommend:

Blu and Exile - Below the Heaven
CunninLynguists - Southernunderground, Dirty Acres, and A Piece of Strange (I'd suggest listening to this one last because it is a lot different of a sound)

I swear The Cold Vein was a good 10 years ahead of it's time, no exaggeration at all. A-mazing album. Try out El-P - Fantastic Damage as well while you're at it too

Tried Madvillan - Madvillainy or Quasimoto - The Unseen? Are they regarded as 'underground'?
