His stories are much darker and grittier than the other names. He likes to tailor his stories more to real life where there are so many variables that can influence certain things. You also have to keep in mind that his stories aren't yet complete.
I've said last season and I'll say it again, I think A Song of Fire and Ice/Game of Thrones will have a bitter-sweet ending. I'm telling yall right now GRRM gonna veer left and knock everyone off their feet when he ends his series. I think for him, the most important thing for his legacy is going to be trying to end it where it still has legs to run and become it's own life. Much like Star Trek, Star Wars, X-Men, Stargate Atlantis, Lexx, Godfather, etc.
"Haven't made a significant cultural impact"??
Bruh, we are in the mist of witnessing the birth of his cultural impact.
Just in the last 4 years.....basically since the start of the show....
I've heard people from various news programs,TV shows, rappers, actors, singers and every day folks reference some aspect of Games of Thrones literally and figuratively
There's no doubt people will be analyzing and dissecting this series for decades after it has ended
The only advantage the other writers had was they licensed out and made " franchise" deals(movies,Toys, cartoons, video games, TV SHOWS) for their work which helped expedite their popularity....which GRRM has now done with HBO
