This is what some people don't understand. Telling a 20 yr old to just log off social media ain't as easy as it seems. Their entire way of living has been defined by it

Dog stop it. You seriously acting like people are out of line for telling this chick not to take social media so seriously.

I don't care how old she is. She, like a lot of these kids nowadays, need to learn this lesson. Hell, older people need to learn this lesson too because they are the ones losing jobs and ruining their lives by putting stupid things on Facebook.

If social media is upsetting her then she should turn it off. It's a no-brainer. She knows the deal, she justs wants the adulation to return.

For better or for worse, we live our lives through this strange cyber world these days, and we are only going to get more and more dependent on it for social interaction. Thats an over simplification by Tyler, the Creator.

It's not an over simplification by any means. The only way you're "cyber bullied" is if you expose yourself to social media. Remove that from your life and it goes away. No one NEEDS social media at all.

Easy to say for a common nobody.

Gabby is a young celebrity at the end of her career already.

She needs social media to stay relevant and in the public eye for possible business opportunities

bullshit.

Olympic athletes go back to their everyday lives when they're done. Sure some of them might go on to commercial endorsements, maybe TV appearances and whatnot, but that's about it. Shit, FloJo went back to work at a bank and doing hair and nails after the 84 and, IIRC, 88 Olympics. We had a guy that worked at my facility in Scottsdale that competed in the 2010 Winter Olympics. He came back, the president of the company took a few pics with him and life went on.

There's thousands of Olympic athletes that go back to their everyday lives after the competition. Plenty of those have medals to boot. There's only so much interest in Olympic athletes that actually win gold medals and next to ZERO for those that get silver or bronze. Gabby had her moment 4 years ago, it's time for her to move on or train even harder for Tokyo in 2020.

FloJo didnt have social media or the internet to live off her fame

Gabby has a following. And while she might not be able live off her name the rest of her life any endorsments or Dancing w Stars bullshit she may get will keep her paid for a few years at least.

Kerri Strug & Dominique Moceanu from 96 dont need to work. Write a book, sell it to those million people who follow u on social media.

The lesson that social media ain't serious enough to let it disrupt what you're doing or how you're feeling about yourself.

Whether she did anything wrong or not is subjective and people have the right to their opinion even if most of those opinions like most opinions in general are stupid. Either way, she shouldn't be letting it take away from what she says is a great experience.

i dont think yall take social media serious enough.

she has black women, a group of people she's repping, mocking her hair

she had america, the same country she's repped at the olympics twice, questioning her patriotism

and only she knows what else people have called her on social media

I DO think the criticism is stupid. i wouldn't care. you wouldn't care. but like @2stepz_ahead said, not everyone is built the same. so if she's hurt, who am i to say she's overreacting? or its not that serious?

if im going to critique anybody in this situation, its not gabby

Shit not only mocking her hair but accusing her of bleaching her skin. Like come on no black person wants to hear shit like that. That their ashamed of their heritage.

The people mocking her hair was black women. Apparently her weave made us all look bad or some mess like that. It was silly. But the trolls know they got to her so it's a feeding frenzy. Right or wrong it won't stop. She can be a glutton for punishment or just turn it off. No other choice really.

and that's bullshit as well. I have a 22 year old and an 18 year old, both of which can tell you they grew up with their own PC's (my 18 year old has had one since she was 3) and NEITHER would say they "grew up with social media". FB didn't open up to everyone until 2006, but even then a lot of parents weren't allowing their kids to have FB accounts after the mess that Myspace accounts caused.

If it's causing a problem in your life, you need to let it go. This is the whole premise behind Tyler's statement that I posted:

If "cyber bullying" is a thing in your life, you can easily remove it from your presence by not being on social media. It really is that simple. Quite a few celebrities don't have a social media presence and they get along just fine.

I'm not saying she's overreacting. I'm sure people have said very hurtful things, and it's probably fair for her to be hurt by those things. My point is less that she should let those things affect her and more that she should avoid the source (i.e. social media) for a while.

Also, to be fair, I'm not really criticizing Gabby at all here. I was more reacting to the idea that people are wrong to tell her to avoid the shit. I don't know if it said it in this particular article, but in another article I read, Gabby herself said she knew that people were saying things on social media so she had been avoiding it. In other words, she was doing exactly what people on here recommended. The reason she was crying was because the jackass interviewer decided it was a good idea to bring it up after she just missed any chance of getting an individual medal. She was already disappointed. Having to then address shit she was trying to avoid broke her down, and that's completely understandable especially for a 20 y/o female.

No one needs it but it's right there on your phone. Not bein' able to go on social media because you're a target for bullyin' might just be as bad as the actual bullyin' itself.

It's a new problem.

If you walked into a room and saw a gram of coke on the table are you going to use it?

Just because it's there doesn't mean you're forced to use it.

You do know cyber bullying is just an extension of bullying offline too right? Would you tell a kid being bullied at school to just stop going to school? Or would you address the people actually doing the bullying too?

You're missing the point. No one is saying that she shouldn't be affected by criticism. Yeah, I can imagine that if she were strapped to a chair and force to hear what thousands of people had to say about her, it would be rough. However, the point that people are making is that she isn't strapped to a chair. She can very easily walk away from that criticism if it's too tough for her to take.
