Exactly, there's a lot of hypocrisy in France right now. France was talking about "freedom of speech is the greatest thing to society" but now they're cancelling free speech almost completely. France is now run by a bunch of facists who no longer respect the right to say whatever you want. Isn't that what Hebdo was doing? And they made illegal pro-Palestinian protests, smh France is now a facist society.
France has devolved into exactly what democracy isn't supposed to devolve into, mob rule. Despite what people are saying, the French gov't has specifically targeted Muslims with laws specifically designed to restrict their personal freedom of expression through banning articles of clothing.
France also has a long history of discrimination and marginalization specific to Muslims and Arabs/North Africans, starting with their colonization of Northern Africa. (Seriously, look up their history with the Algerians).
The outrage against Charlie Hebdo runs deeper than just cartoons. It's the country essentially advocating discrimination and xenophobia towards a specific population. The xenophobes will argue that you can't be racist against a religous group, but in Europe this Islamophobia is tied to a much larger sentiment against immigrants and "foreign-looking people". Islamophobia just encompasses their overall bigotry into something they can target and mock and discriminate against without considering themselves out-and-out racists (it's cognitive dissonance at it's finest, but that's a whole different argument altogether).
Anyway, mocking Muslims is their way of social persecution and hiding-in-plain-sight racism. The cartoons themselves are more than mocking our Prophet. It's also about mocking the only lasting piece of identity of an entire subgroup of the population. It's telling them that everything you know, everything you stand for, everything about you is wrong and completely violent, and the majority French taking action to prevent you from living your life the way you see fit and mocking you is justified b/c you aren't them. It's the telling the minority that the majority can talk shit to you but you can't to them.
The French have failed in democracy b/c they have failed to allow Muslims to feel welcome in their country. What they've done is take the Northern African and other immigrants and throw them into ghettos. They haven't even attempted to provide them economic mobility or social equality. There have been multiple riots in the past decade emerging from these ghettos based around the government's unwillingness to provide them with jobs or decent living standards.
When you subjugate a population by claiming they are a foreign element not welcome in the country unless they sellout ALL of their own principles and cultural norms, provide them with no economic mobility, mock them in public, discriminate them in policy so they can't even dress how they want, and then touch heart to an element of their cultural/religious identity that is a severe thorn, you are asking for trouble.
Attacks like this and future ones are a long-time coming in that country. Northern Africans, especially, haven't forgotten what the French have done to them. And the current wave of Islamophobia is only a continued policy of social and political discrimination and isolation.
