I'm from the Bay Area, and let me tell you in the late 80's early 90's Mac Dre was HUGE. He was on the road to super-stardom until he foolishly got involved in armed robberies. Towards the end of his career was he was getting desperate for cash. I remember one of my friends paid him $1000 to drop a 8 bar verse on one of his singles.

to me Mac Dre was a solid nigga, on and off the mic, BaY Area crestside to the fullest, he spit a lot of game, not the lyrical type rapper, more of a game spitter.
he has some silly songs, some shit to laugh at, but he can get on some gangsta shit, some introspective social shit, he was a versatile rapper.
Mac Dre's opinion alone over a track would 9 times outta 10 be some shit you can agree with.
as to why he's a legend, i can't make you feel like he's a legend, me personally he is a legend he always came with something that you can ride to, he may not be your taste but it's plenty of well respected rappers who aren't for everybody.

people have there prefrences but to me Mac Dre is one of the best to do it not just from a lyrical stand point but just word for word what he brought to the mic, people can say "he wasn't respected like that until he died" which isn't true, he was actually gaining more noteriety before he died, and he influenced a lot of other rappers after him, he was one of the few real ni99as to do it, he didn't just stick to a cliche'd image.

well its kinda true im from the bay and until after he died the radio and ppl started gettin in to him like he was a new artist. like one poster said hes been doin it since the late 80s early 90s jus like too short, e40 and alot of rappers out here have been doin it. i wasnt the biggest fan but he had some cuts that slapped tho. i think hes a ledgend jus for the independent hustle he had been doin for years. hyhpy wasnt really original it had been goin on for years since i was a kid and shit. but he was the first nigga to really be talkin about it on records and shit.
